Herefordshire Completed Look up Requests / Re: 1841/1851 census
« on: Monday 15 May 06 04:02 BST (UK) »
Thanks EBN,

I didn't know that, but am not surprised as the Baynhams were in business (glazing, painting, etc.) in Bridge Street in early 1800's.

The family was from Yazor & Mansell Lacy, but son George Baynham went to Kington early 1800s & married local Susannah James Lewis.

I have passed your info about Samuel Baynham & Elizabeth Eckley marriage to other family researchers, and let's say there's some excitement. Sam has been hard to trace, but it seems likely that he is the missing link of the Herefordshire Baynhams to those of Gloucestershire - sheriffs in the 1300s and with a tree back to the 1000s... naturally we're keen to link Sam to published pedigrees, which end in mid 1600s...

Cheers

PS Is what I have heard right, that Kington has the best old book stores in the UK? I'm planning a few months visit in 2007 (long service leave) and hope to spend much of it in HEF if I can find the right B&B for a long stay.

EBN,

Thank you so much for the ECKLEY name in this marriage! This is my biggest 18C brick wall, and now a chink of light shows...

I knew that Samuel & Elizabeth BAYNHAM were my g6 grandparents twice (I'm descended from both their daughter Sarah and their son William, via a later 2nd cousin marriage).

Now it gets more so, as William married Catherine GOODE, whose grandmother was one Joyce ECKLEY of Yazor... seems there was a small pool of yeomenry in this area!

Cheers
Steve Eckley-Eckley-Baynham-Baynam

PS I can only count to 20 on my fingers and toes, so no obvious problem with all this consanguinity...

Ireland / Prerogative Wills Index lookup please?
« on: Wednesday 27 July 05 15:17 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm hoping sks has a copy of "Index to the Prerogative Wills of Ireland" and willing to look up the following entries for me:

1796 Coulter, Joseph, Dowdallshill, co. Louth, gent.
1801 Coulter, Joseph, Carnbegg, co. Louth, gent.

I think/hope these entries should also have reference information (volume number?) that I was newbie enough not to copy when I had access to the index (alas, no longer).

I want to order the LDS film(s) for these entries and believe I need volume information from the index to decide which films I need. If I'm wrong about this, then perhaps someone who knows could explain how to go about it?

Thanks,
Steve

PS for anyone who is wondering what all this is about - all the Prerogative Wills of Ireland were destroyed in 1922, but there are surviving genealogical abstracts of most of the wills up to 1810, by Betham - the index is to his abstracts.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Re: 1861 Look Up Workington Cumberland

I can't find her in Welsh census either - I think you have a toughie here!

There is a possible entry on the IGI but it's just a patron batch (not indexed from original records):

Letticia DAVIS b. 11 Feb 1854, Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales; d. 3 Sep 1925. Father Edward DAVIS.

That's all... maybe you know her death date and whether it matches the above?

I've searched the 1861 index but not found - looked for Let* Dav* and Sop* Dav*, so should match most variations unless the indexing is really blundered.

I had a thought - do you know if Edward died before the 1861 census? Further, if his widow married again?

I have once or twice seen children appear under step-father's name on the census, then use their "real" name later in life - in fact one sees names change for all sorts of reasons - but I'm probably clutching at straws here...

Sorry to not be much help...

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Re: 1861 Census Cleator Moor
« on: Sunday 08 May 05 05:19 BST (UK) »
Lynn,

There is one Margaret KELLY in Cleator in 1861 about the right age (22) - a little older than expected, though it has been known to happen...

There is also a lodger the same age called Hugh MCANALLEY - could be significant...

RG9/3951 / folio 9 / page 11 / sched 36 / Cleator Village
Margaret Kelly / Head / W / 49 / / Ireland
Margaret do / Daur / Un / 22 / Flax Mill Hand / do
Bernard do / Son / Un / 18 / Iron Ore Miner / do
Elizabeth do / Daur / Un / 16 / Flax Mill Hand / do
Agnes do / Daur / Un / 11 / do / do
Robert do / Son / Un / 9 / do / Cumberland Cleator
Elizabeth McCarter / Lodger / Un / 19 / do / Ireland
Hugh McAnalley / do / Un / 22 / Iron Ore Miner / do
John Fitzpatrick / do / Un / 21 / Mason Labourer / do

I'm having trouble finding a matching James SLOANE, though - and I can't find the 1871 entry you mention - do you have the reference for this so I can use the info for 1861 search?

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1861 Middx census - Berkshire?
« on: Saturday 07 May 05 14:11 BST (UK) »
Actually, most of Middlesex appears ok - but the registration districts of Barnet and Edmonton (at least) have been indexed under Berkshire.

This seems to be because for 1861, these two RDs have high out-of-sequence piece numbers - in high 700's, while most of Middlesex runs from 000's to 100's. Other 700's are in Berkshire.

I have informed Ancestry and pointed out what the problem is (that they don't seem to have allowed for out-of-sequence piece numbers) - and that the problem probably affects various RDs in other counties. However (strangely) they have got all those notorious "Welsh" pieces in Herefordshire right!

Apart from this glitch, I'm really surprised at how good the indexing is in general! Have found lots of AWOL ancestors already... using "less is more" principle when searching...

Cumberland Lookup Requests / 1851 census Cockermouth - Isabella JOHNS(T)ON
« on: Saturday 07 May 05 13:46 BST (UK) »
Greetings Genies,

I think I've finally found my Isabella JOHNS(T)ON nee DYER in the 1861 census Cockermouth:

RG9/3935/94/33 Derwent St
 WHITAKER Betsy / head / mar / 37 / Cleator
 SCOFIELD Sarah J / dau / 11 / Hull
 WHITAKER James / son / 4 / Cockermouth
 JOHNSTON Isabella / grandmother (sic) / wid / 73 / Whitehaven

Betsy JOHNSON/SCHOFIELD/WHITTAKER fits fairly well with Isabella's daughter Elizabeth b 1821. Also, a Henry JOHNSTON just around the corner in Crown St Cockermouth in 1861 census fits perfectly with Isabella's son Henry b 1818 Whitehaven. So I think (hope!) this is my Isabella.

I'd be grateful if SKS could please check 1851 census for Cockermouth for Isabella JOHNS(T)ON, hoping she's with husband Joseph to confirm it is the right Isabella (marr 1817 St Bees). When youngest son William arrived Sydney 1852, he said they were both living, and in Cumberland.

Roly Grigg's index shows the following in Cockermouth, giving me hope:
JOHNSTON ... Jos (54) Isabella (62) ... [2434 fols 420-507]
I checked online partial transcription for Cockermouth 1851, but they're not there.

TIA
Steve

PS Whoo-hoo! In the 1871, 83yo Isabella is head at Derwent St (lodging house), and "Betty" (39yo!) correctly shown as daughter (her husband William is at home too). Then in 1881 Elizabeth WHITTAKER (58yo) is there as head (William elsewhere again). I'm pretty sure these are the folk I've been looking for the last five years... just wish Betsy would age at the same rate as the rest of us...

PPS Even better, just found another of Isabella's daughters, Maria b. 1819 in Cleator, marr to Thomas BELL and living in Cockermouth in 1861 - looks like the whole tribe moved from Whitehaven some time.
