I read that 'formerly' is used for the maiden name or birth name.  I have a marriage certificate where the wife was Elizabeth late Cook, formerly Bisdee and it turned out that Bisdee was her maiden name and prior to this she had married Charles Cook.  So the plot thickens!   Lesley

Thank you very much Ann.  I will pass on to my friend Janice whose family I was helping to research.

Thank you Anne.  I will pass these on to my friend Janice whose family I was helping to research. Interesting use of 'late' in the register - perhaps she was previously married?
kind regards
Lesley

Hello Janice. I'm sorry for the delay in replying to you. I did this research on your behalf as you had mentioned your ''brick wall" to me.  I suppose you didn't notice my name!  i will email you about it.
Best wishes, Lesley

Yes, that makes a big difference!  Thank you very much. I hope you didn't have to spend too long on the photo but I rather fear you did!

Thank you Wayne.  He definitely looks younger now that he has colour in his cheeks!  Do you think there is something a bit odd about the photo though?  I can't quite work out what is going on with bottom lip? Lesley

Hi dobfarm.  Yes, Gt Aunt Nell was the daughter of Thomas Mackesy.  So as you say she should know if it was her father.  I'm not satisfied that he is Gt Grandfather Harris who would have been almost 50 at the time.  Question: Have I got the date of the photograph right?  Jayne Shrimpton says winged collars were becoming fashionable in the late 19th century and continued over to the early 20th century.  There again she also says that the three piece lounge suite became the popular Sunday best of the working man in the late 1860s & 1870s.  So, I'm back where I started wondering if this photo was older than the mount suggests?

Thank you Peter, the sepia version is much softer - very nice.  Yes. his neckwear is very odd - a double exposure?  Looks like a winged shirt collar though doesn't it?
Thanks also to RJ137 for your version.  Lesley
