The Common Room / Re: Ancestry tree: finding individual?
« on: Wednesday 03 April 24 16:11 BST (UK)  »
If you want to use software, a laptop or desktop would work best...as far as I know, there is only one full-featured genealogy program that works on an iPad. And don't buy a Chromebook, as most software won't work on those either...

Martin, thank you very much for the suggestion.  My only trees are on paper and Ancestry.  I’ve been very interested in purchasing software so that I don’t have to rely on a pay site for my trees and can have an electronic tree.  Once I finally decide if I will purchase another iPad, laptop or computer, I will definitely look into purchasing family tree software.  At that time, I can download the gedcom.

Thank you again, Lisa

Kent / Re: Kent Will 1697

I have also had success viewing Wills from FamilySearch at a FamilySearch Affiliate Library (FSAL). Often FSALs are more accessible than FamilySearch Centres.

The wills on Familysearch are, alas. only available from one of their family history centres (as I understand it). This is due to copyright problems.

Brilliant! Thanks so much - I love old directories like this and have now saved it to my Google Books library :)

Hi all,

I recently came across a publication on Google Books which could prove useful to Rootschatters researching 18th century London addresses and/or businesses.

It also includes national, international and general business-related information, e.g. details of markets across England and Wales, Hackney Carriage fares, guidance about weights and measures, taxes, international trade , foreign currencies, book-keeping tabulations, etc. (That's why I've posted this in the Common Room rather than in the London & Middlesex section, or elsewhere.)

Published in 1763, it's called The Compleat Compting-House Companion: Or, Young Merchant and Tradesman's Sure Guide.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Deciphing 1841 census occupation
« on: Friday 02 February 24 05:33 GMT (UK)  »
I also agree ... annoying when the enumerator used abbreviations that made sense to them at the time, but left people almost 2 centuries later trying to figure out what they meant...

Hi, and welcome to Rootschat.

The occupation you are looking for is "Power L. (Loom) Weaver".

Regards,
Istrice

Family History Beginners Board / Re: FHL Film Number and Reference ID

Don't forget that many images that are restricted from home are viewable as well at a FamilySearch Affiliate Library - it's well worth checking to see if there's one nearby.

NOTE - on FamilySearch some files can only be viewed at a FH Centre, but the images viewable on your pc have a download option, or you can use the Ctrl PrintScreen option using your keyboard.

Hope this helps

The Common Room / Re: Find My Past Newspaper search changing
« on: Tuesday 05 December 23 16:36 GMT (UK)  »
While I've had success using FindMyPast's search, I agree that using the BNA search is also helpful as it does catch articles that FindMyPast misses.

I did not find the Newspaper searching on FindMyPast of any use at all.

I found masses of info on the BNA site and it was this info that I looked for on FindMyPast where it found zero articles.

So my suggestion is to not rely just on one site.

The Common Room / Re: Should I contact this relative? Advice appreciated.
« on: Monday 04 December 23 17:09 GMT (UK)  »
This is my feeling as well - I'm always happy to hear from someone, no matter how distant the connection. You never know what information each has to help the other!

The worst that can happen is they don't respond or say that they're not interested in corresponding. You never can tell.

If a seventh cousin contacted me I would be interested in corresponding.

There is usually someone in a family who is interested in the family history, and if not this seventh couisn, one of their close family members might be.

I don’t think there is any harm in contacting him. He may be able to help you expand your tree.

Huntingdonshire / Re: Ramsey Parish Record LOOKUP needed - Overall
« on: Tuesday 25 July 23 15:35 BST (UK)  »
If I understand correctly, Ancestry has digitized the parish records in the Cambridgeshire Archives, which also includes those from Huntingdonshire, and they should be available on Ancestry later this year or early next year. I too have parish register entries from Ramsey I need to see. Am just holding tight until next year!

Hey Queenie,

None of the Ramsey baptisms are online, that's why I posted hoping that someone might have access to a copy of the Parish Registers to look up.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Polish Birth Record transcript
« on: Sunday 25 June 23 04:39 BST (UK)  »
I too had problems seeing the image clearly enough. You might also find this useful:

https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Polish_Civil_Registration_Reading_Aid

If you post a link to the actual image, I might be able to help a little...I often have problems reading the script...at least be glad it's not in Russian!

Hello , can anyone give a transcription of this polish birth record from 1849 please ?  Many thanks .
