I have the marriage certificate now, and can confirm that the father is John Selby the lace maker. Therefore , I can deduce that Annie is most likely to be the one born in Nottingham, and not Cromwell. Her age is a bit 'variable' on the Census. I can also follow the correct parents as well.

What is interesting is that the couple married in Nottingham in 1892 , and went to live/work in Grimsby. From the marriage certificate, a witness was Eliza Dina Harwood, who was Henrys sister. I found that she married Frank Shardlow in Nottingham in 1890 , and they went to Grimsby (census 1891). The Harwoods then lived with Eliza and Frank in their early years of their move from Nottingham to Grimsby.

Hi
Many thanks for these details
The dates that I have noted down are the dates of entry on the Freeman Roll , so I'm not surprised that they threw you!
Now you have made me think that the older Thomas could have become a Freeman because he married Elizabeth Good - because the marriage date (31 May 1826) is just before Thomas Bailey is entered on the Freeman roll (8 June 1826). I will try to explore that

In 1881 he is shown as a Revenue & Greenwich Pensioner

The Greenwich Hospital was a charitable foundation, supported by sixpence a month from the wages of both naval and merchant seamen, as well as by the wages of deserters, unclaimed prize money etc. After the closure of Greenwich Hospital as an institute accepting resident pensioners in 1869, it continued as a fund distributing various pensions.

Are the records for the Greenwich Pensions accessible , so that I can find out specific details for Thomas Bailey's pension? I want to try to find out whether he was a naval or merchant seamen before becoming a revenue mariner

Lincolnshire / Freemen of Grimsby: Baileys
« on: Tuesday 03 May 16 13:06 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to confirm which of my Baileys were Freemen , and how they became Freemen.

I can see names of enrolled 'Baileys' but would like to know if there are details held in the records about how they became Freemen - through their descent, or through apprenticeship.

I would be a freeman if I still lived in Grimsby , and I know my grandfather is on the list William Preston Bailey 2/10/1919,
his father is possibly Charles Bailey 23/08/1888,
and his father is possibly Thomas Burton Bailey on 18/07/1860,
and his father is possibly Thomas Bailey in 8/06/1826.

Now Thomas was born in Hull, so he could have apprenticed, or it is the wrong Thomas?

Can anyone help me find the details?

Many Thanks

John

I like the idea of an undercover tax man almost as much as being the forerunner of Starbucks..

The map is great , I must look at the website. I have a few of my ancestors in the old terraces of Grimsby. I believe there are two phases to the re-development - around the time of the dock redevelopment (early c19?) , and then of course , in the 1960's - 90's.

Lincolnshire / Coffee House in Grimsby 1861Thomas Bailey b1801-

I am trying to join the dots on the life of my ancestor Thomas Bailey (b 1901 Hull). He appears in Grimsby census' from 1841 to 1881 , excluding 1871. His occupations have shown as:
Coffee House keeper and retired mariner (1851)
superannuated revenue officer (1861)
Revenue and Greenwich Pensioner (1881)

I have asked for help generally in the beginners section , but I hoped someone here may know about the Coffee House in Grimsby in 1851 - or where to point me for possible clues

Any advice would be really appreciated.

The 1871 census occupation shows superannuated Revenue , then in brackets possibly- 'deported mariner'. Have I read that correctly?

The coastguard and Customs links are great thanks, and I will explore these.

Which are the best records to try and find out about his life in the early c19?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

And who would have thought Grimsby would have a coffee house in 1851

Wow, thanks for the offer, but I have bitten the bullet and ordered one!!

I am glad that my doubts about which Annie is my relative are reasonable.

Can anyone tell me if there is a street map of Nottingham available for around 1900, so I can check out the various census addresses?
