The Common Room / Re: new price for GRO certs

Seems to me the more popular Genealogy has become the more greedy Government offices become.
What a ripe off. I am enjoying doing my family research but it is so annoying that i will now have to justify spending that amount or more for my hobby.. :'(

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Mckegg/Mccaig
« on: Sunday 09 July 06 12:57 BST (UK)  »
I am intrested in anyone who has the surname Mckegg or Mccaig in their tree.
I am tracing my grandmothers family on my mothers side and have got back to 1847, starting with the name Mckegg to the name Mccaig.
I live in York where my family live but there is one of the Mckeggs that seems to have gone AWOL and i feel  that he went out of our area. He disappeared in 1850 after losing his wife and left his son with a foster family in York.
I am also intrested in where the family comes from.
Scotland or Ireland?

Any help from any areas would be apprecated.

Regards

Vanessa

Hello Arronroots.

Thank you for taking the trouble to look up the info for me.

I am having trouble getting William and Marys marriage certificate owing to the misspelling of Marys surname(but then again who knows which surname is the correct spelling).
I have also just found out that William could have been away in the 1899-1902 Boer War.
I have just recieved his burial details from Hugh Murray historian at York cemetry and it tells me that when he died in 1938 the British legion paid for his funaral.
I have been in touch with our local British legion and they are trying to help me find which regiment he was in and hopfully it will also give me an address for his family.

Thank you again.

Hiya Christopher.

Thankyou for getting back to me.
I am trying to find out where the Mckeggs came from and your info is greatly appreciated.
Bridgets maiden name was CRANE according to her marriage cetificate to my great great grandfather DENNIS MCKEGG in 1878.
It also states that she was a widow at the time. I am now trying to find her first marrige to a chap called BREEN.I do not know if she married him in Ireland or England. There is no record of a marriage in England.
I have a feeling that these names may be misspelt as well.
Bridget was born in 1846. But as to where and when she came over to England is another matter.
Dennis died in 1880. She then remarried a chap named JOHN DRINKLE in 1881. Bridget died in York in 1892 aged 45years.
She had so much happening to her in her short life. Married and widowed 3 times.
I am looking forward to any info no matter how small for me to get my teeth into.
Of all my ancesters she fasinates me the most.
I am going to check the websites you have recomended to me on the Mckeggs.(all spellings).
I have got has far as a marriage in 1847 in Ripon North yorkshire of MY GREAT GREAT GREAT gradfather William Mccaig.(New spelling of the name).
He married a Mary ann Wakefield. She died aged 21years in 1850.
Thank you again Christopher for you advice.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: 1901 census lookup please.
« on: Thursday 20 April 06 10:29 BST (UK)  »
Good morning Valda.

1881. Bridget Mckegg. Aged 35yrs. Farm worker. Born Ireland.
living with son William aged 2 years on long close lane, York.
In 1881 Bridget remarries to a John Drinkell. But in the 1891 census she is back with her son and using the name Mckegg.
Then to confuse matters she says she is 59yrs old and born in America and her son William a 42 yrs old labourer. Bridget died in 1892 after that i can not find william.
Williams father, DENNIS mckegg was born in selby in 1849 and his surname has been spelt MCAGE. Dennis`s parents surname was spelt MCCAIG on their marriage in ripon in 1847.
Dennis on the 1851 census (MCKEY) in York.
Dennis on the 1861 census(MCKEG) in York
Could not find him on the 1871 census. He married Bridget in 1878.

Sorry for being long winded but this is all i have found out at the moment and maybe you will understand why i feel i am going mad.

Hope you can throw some light on this.

Regards

Vanessa

P.s   sorry. The addresses for them all was the same, ST DENNIS`S, WALMGATE, YORK.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1901 census lookup please.
« on: Wednesday 19 April 06 23:49 BST (UK)  »
Please excuse me but i think i first put this request out on the wrong board.

I am looking for my great grandfather WILLIAM MCKEGG.
I have looked up and down the 1901 census, change the spelling of surname many different ways but to no avail.
He was born in YORK in 1878.
He married MARY MCHALE(surname spelt wrong on records) in LEEDS in 1899.
They had a son,JOHN in LEEDS in 1899.
By the time their second son,DENNIS was born in YORK  in 1902 they were back in YORK.
Help me before i go round the bend.

PLEASE.

Married in ripon 1847.
I do not know the ages of bride and groom or where the groom came from.

Hello James.

You have suprised me with the address, 75 Huntington road.
It is where my great grandfather died in 1938.
I always thought it was his home.
Now i know better.
I understand that part of the workhouse was a hospital.
I have lived in York nearly all my life and i am still finding things out.
Thank you for posting your question.
