The discharge book was carried by the sailor in person and recorded the vessels he sailed on with dates of engagement and discharge. As this is a personal document no copies are kept at the archive. The discharge book contained much the same information as his form CRS 10
I note he never claimed his medal entitlement.
Have you checked the crew agreement and logbook of the last vessel he sailed on?
Have you checked out the Ernest Hardwick who died at Blyth, Northumberland in 1982?
Interesting. Thanks for your suggestions; all are helpful and appreciated
We can't find birth info on the Ernest Hardwick who died at Blyth in 1982. Our Hardwick would have been 89 in 1982 so we're a bit sceptical it could be him. Anecdotally, Hardwick wasn't in good health when he left the MN in 1945; possible but hard to imagine he lived a long life to almost 90. He was in WW1 for the duration including being wounded, he worked in the coal mines, and finally worked 20 years as a fireman in the MN. Not an easy life.
We have info from Hardwick's CRS10 and on his last vessel in the MN, the Avon Gwili; nothing however stands out other than he went awol while in port resulting in him being fined and released for misconduct. That's the last info we have on him.
We haven't been able to locate the info on Hardwick's MN medal entitlement. Do you have a reference number so we could look this up.
