Cheshire / Re: LEA of Sandbach, Cheshire & Staffordshire
« on: Sunday 28 May 06 17:48 BST (UK)  »
Hello Diana,
I am searching for the parents of Hannah (or Ann) Lees from  Sandbach. Her husband was Thomas Turner - they lived in Odd Rode.  Is it possible that the Lees name is the same as Lea?  Are the names of Lee,  Leese, and Lees the same as Lea?  Your Peter Lea had a daughter Ann born in 1816 - could that be the Ann Lees I am looking for?  I have not yet viewed the church records of Sandbach.
Thank you!
Barbara

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Snape in 1871
« on: Monday 27 March 06 22:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I'm trying to find out if the wife of George (b. abt 1818) and Sarah Snape(b. abt 1817) are in the 1871 census in Staffordshire (Biddulph). They lived in Mow Cop.  I'm trying to find death dates so MAYBE I can find Sarah's maiden name and Parents for both George and Sarah. George (at 63) appears to be in the 1881 census with his son William in Mow Cop as a widower. I have both George and Sarah in 1851, 1861 - are they in the 1871 census?? Don't confuse them with their son George Snape and wife Mary. There is a sister Sarah 13 in that record--so maybe her mother Sarah(b.1817) has died. Where's the older George in 1871?
Thanks!
Barbara

Thank you so much for the webpages explaining what may be found in the various certificates. Wonderful.

No, that's his son George Snape married to Mary Turner. I'm looking further back to George Snape (born about 1818) and wife Sarah (born about 1817) . Sorry, I should have explained that.  A bit confusing there. George Snape is married to Sarah and you've already found them with their family in 1851 and 1861. They were probably married 1841 or before. The younger George Snape and wife Mary are indeed in 1871 with somebody's sister called Sarah, age 13. That Sarah could be the daughter of the older Snapes--thus, her mother Sarah may have died by then.I presumed the older George Snape should still be living in 1871 since I think I found him in 1881 with son Walter.
Does that make sense?  I haven't found the marriage of the older George Snape and Sarah--or births, or parents. I found a death certificate in Scotland which gave me information which I had never been able to find before (for years).  I'm hoping maybe a death certificate in England may be that helpful!
Thank you!

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / 1871 census Staffordshire for Snape
« on: Monday 27 March 06 18:59 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Can someone tell me if Sarah Snape (age 54) is in the 1871 census for Mowcop, Biddulph, Stafforshire?  I know her husband George (then age 53) is still alive in 1881 at age 63  living with son Walter. I am looking for their death records and I'd like to narrow down the search.
Does anyone know how informative the death records are? I need Sarah's maiden name and parents, as well as George's parents. I'm slowly going through the free BMDs.
The church records seem to be elusive as well. I've checked Biddulph church records and not a Snape could I find. There are other churches farther away. I keep chugging along.
Thank you so much,
Barbara

I appreciate the help that you have already sent me. I am still not sure about Margaret Wilson's birthplace. She was married to Robert Stewart. Both were born about 1844 or 1845. I have responses about the 1881 census which says Margaret was born in Dalry. I want to see if she is listed as from Dalry in 1871 as well. The LDS listings have two versions of Margaret's birth. I probably will have to order a certificate of her death or the marriage or something, but before I spend money to do that, I would like to know how she is listed in 1871 with husband Robert Stewart.
Thank you once again,
Barbara

Ayrshire / 1871 and 1881 census Beith Ayrshire
« on: Saturday 18 February 06 19:37 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone look up Robert Stewart and wife Margaret (Wilson) in 1871 and/or 1881 census in Beith, Ayrshire.  What I need is Margaret's birthplace.  Their marriage was Dec. 1864 in Beith.  There are more than one Margaret Wilson born about 1844 in Beith or nearby towns.  I need to know which Margaret Wilson married Robert Stewart.  I've searched the 1851 census by reading the whole thing and I cannot find her.  Robert is there at age 7.
Thank you!

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1851, 1861, 1871 census Staffordshire for Snape
« on: Monday 13 February 06 23:10 GMT (UK)  »
The town of Mow Cop lies right on the border between Staffordshire and Cheshire.  The Snapes were born in Mow Cop Staffordshire.  Mary Turner, George's wife, was born in Cheshire in 1849 (according to the obit). It could be that she was born on the other side of town!  I don't know where her birth would have been recorded.  Any suggestions?

I would appreciate if anyone can find a George Snape in the  census in 1851,1861,1871 in Mow Cop in Staffordshire.  Mow Cop is sometimes listed as Mole.  Right on border with Cheshire.  Biddulph is a nearby larger town (maybe listed there??)
George Snape born about 1845 in Mow Cop.
Married Mary Turner in Mowcop in 1867 in Mow Cop.
Went to U.S. about 1873.
Thanks,
Barbara
