Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: Thomas Baldock born 1792 at Salehurst, Sussex

Thanks Emeltom for the info re "Thomas Baldock baptised in Burwash 30 Sep 1792, parents William and Sarah". The year is right. Great !  I will explore that inter-village link with interest. There were also a significant number of Baldcock families living in Wadhurst, over several lifetimes, that is another inter-village connection worth exploring.

Thanks John for all the info from the Salehurst "Paupers Ledgers", brilliant !

Thanks John

I have just seen your info… Thos Baldock died 8 Feby 1829. That explains why I couldn’t find him… Thos instead of Thomas.

Re: John Hope Baldock and Georgina Hope Baldock… The base born children with the Hope middle name may have been the offspring of one of the members of the Hope family who lived close nearby in Salehurst during that decade. Of course it could just be an aspiring name with which to christen children? The Baldocks have some form christening their children with neighbour’s surnames, because in the next generation a Henry Tolhurst Baldock 1860-1943 is named after a friendly neighbouring family, the Tolhursts.

Jonw65 Thank you for that info.

There are several Hannah Baldocks about that time. It is difficult to distinguish them.
I agree with you. The Sussex Parish Registers confirm that a Hannah Baldock was buried at Salehurst in 1854, which makes her born circa 1799, which is close to her christening date of 1798. There is a difference in spelling her name, with the parish registers recording a double n, and the EW BMD suggesting there was only a single n. Nevertheless probably the same and right person.

The Hannah Baldock who died in 1851 reg Ticehurst vol 7-363 appears to have been only 1 year of age, so she is not our Hannah. Clearly that was an error on my part. Grateful to you for pointing it out.

Hannah Baldock probably died between 1851-61 because she appears in the 1851 Census residing at Hurst Green, but is absent from the 1861 census. The 1851 census says…
Hannah Baldock 51 married Laundress  b. Salehurst
Samuel Baldock  24 son single Gardener  b Salehurst
Georgina Hope Baldock  16 daughter single b. Salehurst

The remaining children have the right names so it is definitely her. Her husband Thomas Baldock is missing and he was also missing in the 1841 census. Does anyone know what happened to him?

Hi, Does anyone know the ancestors of Thomas Baldock born 1792 at Salehurst, Sussex ? His wife was Hannah Drury born at Salehurst c1796.  Hannah was christened 18 Nov 1798 at Salehurst, Sussex.  The couple married circa 12 April 1817 at St Mary the Virgin, Salehurst, Sussex. They had 7 known  children: Mary Ann Baldock 1817-1896, James Baldock 1821-c1891, Samuel Baldock 1827/1829- 1876, George Baldock 1833- , Elizabeth Baldock 1829- , John Hope Baldock 1832- , and Georgina Hope Baldock 1834- .

Hannah’s parents were Edward Drury 1756-nk and Mary Bunce 1760-1841. Hannah probably died June 1851 age 55, reg at Ticehurst (vol 7-363). Most of her siblings are recorded and known.

Although I would love to know more about any of these ancestors, my main interest is in linking Thomas Baldock 1792 to any of the other prolific Baldock families living nearby in Wadhurst, Ticehurst and Burwash. There must be a link between the Salehurst Baldocks and the other East Sussex Baldocks. Does anyone know what that link is? Finding the parents of Thomas Baldock would appear to be the clue. Can anyone help.

Thanks. Yehan.

Thomas Baldock is my x3 great grandfather.
