Roscommon / Bartley Family, Roscommon --> Tasmania
« on: Wednesday 16 February 05 11:47 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help?  My convict ancestor Catherine Bartley was born c1831 in Ireland.  She was transported to VDL now known as Tasmania in 1850.  Her native place is listed on one record as Kildare and another as Roscommon.  Her father's name according to her record was Terrence.  She had a sister called Eliza and a brother in England called James.  Interestingly a Bartley Kane (could this be the wrong way around?) was arrested at the same time and place and same offence as Catherine for cattle stealing and is listed on the National Archives of Ireland website.  I wonder if he was a relation?  Does anyone know how to track down his court appearance and where he was transported to?  I've got a nespaper article from the Roscommon Weekly Messenger 17 January 1849 which details Catherine's court appearance - would there be a similar one for Bartley Kane? He didn'd come to Tasmania as he isnt listed as arriving here unless he changed his name.  If SKS has an interest in Irish convicts I would love to hear from them - or alternatively someone with access to Bartley BDMs for this period - would love to know what happened to Catherine's father and sibling Eliza. Many thanks Kim in Tasmania

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Staines Cemetery Lookup
« on: Sunday 12 September 04 08:07 BST (UK)  »
This one is a stab in the dark - I have no idea how many cemeteries there are in Staines - hundreds no doubt!
I am seeking a burial location for William Wiltshire who died in the March Qrtr of 1919 in Staines.  He was stone/marble mason so probably had his work represented in some of the local cemeteries, churches etc.  If anyone can assist I would be most grateful.  Hard trying to do this sort of thing on the other side of the world.

Completed Census Requests / 1871 Census Lookup - Sibling of a transportee
« on: Friday 04 June 04 07:06 BST (UK)  »
This one is a bit of a puzzle.  James Bartley enquired about his convict sister to the Governor of Tasmania in July 1868.  He was Irish like his sister and his address was given as Black Horse, Alport Down, Deansgate Manchester.  Guess I am wondering if he was still there in 1871 and if anyone can point me in the right direction to finding out more about this address that he was living at and perhaps where he might have been in 1871 if not at the above address?
Thanks in advance!

Durham / Kiplings of Barnard Castle

My ancestor Jane Kipling was born in Barnard Castle in the mid 1840s.  Her father according to her marriage certificate was Robert Kipling, deceased, a railwayman.  I have no idea who her mother was or siblings.  If anyone can assist I would be most grateful. :)
