Hi Libby,
Many thanks for the lookup, I have these two already under my belt.
I have now a bit more info about 'Percy'. He is logged as the father of all three children dating from 1907 to 1913.
The problem is his name, it would be shortened by the family to Percy. I have him being born c1885, there is a match in Manchester and his father was commissionaire of ports (for the maritime connection) but has Percy at 16 working in the linen trade. I think I will have to wait for the 1911 census and hope he was shore based when it was taken. There is another in Liverpool at the same time with a father as a maritime engineer and an American mother.
I contemplated looking at the Kew merchant marine records but supposedly only about 10% were kept there, the others having been sent to Canada.
Again many thanks for your trouble.

My father (now deceased) has listed on his birth certificate (birth 1913) his mother - Lilley(Lily) Hardern (then 39 years old) and his father Percival John Moore (Merchant Seaman), this is all we have on him. Was he a one night stand and gave the wrong name?
This chappie then seemed to do a runner, I can find no trace of him, but his surname carried on through my father and myself.
Was my grandmother "A Thoroughly Modern Lilley". She carried on until the 50's.
How can I catch up with this man?

Hi Steve,
I too am related to Sam through his son Thomas and his wife Mary Jones.
I am lost in time, but this site seems very well researched and accurate.

They seem to think we are related to Philip Ardern of Yarwood but I cannot find anything on this chappie.
Unfortunately can not get contact with these people as emails just get sent back

In my case Hardern came from Ardern, mainly through lack of education, in the early 1800's. My Ardern's were silk weavers in Macclesfield and then became farmers under a different name in this area.
Best of luck with your search, maybe our paths will cross somewhere else in the realms of time.

Just been looking at your original post
The timeline doesn't match up to mine.
But looking at the location you are searching (I live in Crewe and travel through Audlem all the time)
Hankelow is about 2 miles from Audlem, there was a church there, but I think it is being remodernised (maybe to dwellings)
Coole Pilate is about 3 miles on the Market Drayton side, and that might have been covered by Adderley Church.
If you don't live in the area it might be worth a visit, you could cover Audlem church and the two I mentioned in a few hours. A trip to the local hostelries proves a good source.

My great grandparents were Thomas Hardern and Mary Jones, they had 13 children, my line is through Lily (not yet listed as being traced. I cannot contact the Hales-Owen family yet).
It was this family that brought (H)ardern to the Crewe area.
There are only (up until now) 8 lines established from them, so with mine it makes 9. That leaves 4 to trace.
Please bear in mind that if these people in the late 19th century were not that well educated (or a slightly deaf vicar) there could easily be a name change.
Crewe is only about 10 miles from Audlem, and being a farming community people can easily relocate within the area.
Sorry if this has bent your mind further (I get my niece to do all the figuring) but I was just trying to give you another option.

I am related to the Harderns, around the Crewe, Worleston area. They are linked to this family tree http://www.halbop.btinternet.co.uk/main.htm
