Thanks for that. Sounds positive. I'll see if I can find out more. His sister was living in Montclair, Essex Co, New Jersey in 1900 Regards Margaret

Thank you for that. I think the Charlotte on the 1901 census is correct. Charles was registered with GRO as Arthur Cecil Jun- Sep 1897 born at Hackney. His DOB on his baptism record is 8 Sep 1897, he was baptised at St Matthew, Islington, London on his 1st birthday and christened Charles Arthur Cecil St Leger Wilson. Home address 120 Rotherfield St, Islington, father a Seaman which fits with Arthur Mordaunt Wilson's chequered history which shows he joined the Merchant Navy when he was 17 (1877), deserted his ship 2 years later at Port Adelaide, Australia (1879), it appears he stayed in Australia for a few years and then returned to England. Cecil St Leger wasn't taken to the US by his Aunt Emmeline so he travelled with someone else probably, as you say, by his parents. Emmeline appears to have inherited some money from her grandmother who left the equivalent of £2 million in today's money. I don't know when she 'adopted' Cecil but she treated him as her own son. I'll do some more searching and let you know what I find, if anything.

I can't find Arthur or Charlotte Jessie after 1901 but their son Arthur Cecil St Leger Wilson was adopted by his aunt Emmeline Duthoit Wilson in New York.

This was passed to me by researcher in New York

Brooklyn Daily Eagle
Gold Star Mothers of Queens Tell How Sons Died in Action
Mrs. Emmeline du Thoit Neubert, 89-01 120th St., Richmond Hill— My mission to the soldier graves is a double one. My two sons are over there. They are my own son, Lieut. Bedell M. Neubert, and my adopted son, Cecil St. Leger Wilson. Bedell was killed in an airplane accident on Sept. 15, 1918, near Abord, France, and was buried in St. Mihiel. He was just a youngster of 21 years. Cecil was in the infantry, a first class private. My two boys enlisted at the same time. They wanted to go together. Cecil was killed a t St. Soupplet on Oct. 17, 1918. He was 21 years old and received a citation for conspicuous bravery on the field of battle. He was buried in St. Soupplet.

I can't find him on the US 1910 census and have no idea when Emmeline adopted him. I'd be interested in the info you have on their departure to New York. He didn't appear to know the exact date of his birth but his baptism record shows he was born on 8 Sep 1897 in Hackney which makes me wonder if his parent(s) died when he was very young.

Hi Diane, my husband is the grandson of Alfred Thomas Hemmings, brother of Ruth Amy Hemmings, Laura Sampson's mother. If you are interested in the Hemmings family tree, I have researched their early days in Woodford, Essex and London, also the family of Ruth Amy Hudson (Hemmings) your great, great grandmother. They are on Ancestry.co.uk under the Greer family tree

Regards

Margaret Greer
