Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Re: Derby Quarter Sessions 1815 - Joseph Lowe

Hi again,

Reading again the Convict Indentures, as Native Place it lists Derby, not Derbyshire.  I have checked all the other entries on the sheets.  Some are towns and cities, others are Shires.  All written in the same hand at the same time.  Perhaps its an indicator, perhaps not.

I'll try sending an email to Michel Spencer about the records in the County Record Office.  I definitely need to allocate some extra  time to my trip to Derbyshire.

Thanks again

Jeff

Hi Carol, Derek, Mootoak & Spendlove,

Thanks for all your hard work.

Since I read all the posts this morning, I've been wondering what to do with all the information.

I have his Death Certificate, Marriage Certificate and the Birth Certificate for his son.

After reading his Convict Indentures again I found his native place was Derby and he was a coal miner.  So it looks like we are looking in the right place.

Were there coal mines in Staveley?  Did Ebenezer Smith own one?  Where would the court records be?  Would there likely be any more information there?  Was there a lot of "Machine Breaking" in the Derbyshire area.  Thanks again for your help.  My wife and I are planning a trip to the UK shortly so the Derby area is on our list.

Hi again Carol,

One other tiny piece of information, Joseph was apparently a coal miner.  I'm not sure that helps.

Hi Carol,
Thanks for your question.
The major problem is that we don't have any more information.  According to his Convict Indentures he was 20 Years old when he arrived in Australia.  I thought the Derby Court records may hold a clue as to where he came from.  Any help we can get would be great.

Joseph was convicted at Derby Quarter Sessions on 04 April 1815 of "Feloniously cutting a rope at the front of an engine and for damaging the same."  Sentence of 7 years.  Description:  5'5" tall, dark brown hair, hazel eyes.  He was transported to Australia, and arrived in Port Jackson (Sydney) on board the "Fanny" on 25 April 1816. We know all about his life and family in Australia however I was wondering if someone could get me some additional information on his Offence, Trial, and his family history in the UK before his transportation.

Dear Koromo,

Last week I had a visitor, a cousin, Ray Stallworthy who has been, along with me, researching the Stallworthy family.

We have both been very slack, however we jointly resolved to “get stuck into it” again.

My first resolution was to try to contact Jean Hinder (Stallworthy) from Aylesbury, which I have done and then to contact you to see what you have been up to.  Hopefully your email address hasn’t changed.

I know I promised to send you some information on the Australian branches of the family.

I’ll start with a couple of photos of a grave at Young, NSW.  I know I need to update my Stallworthy file, and as soon as I do I will send you a copy.

The first? Stallworthys in Australia departed England in Oct 1952.

Edward Hutton Stallworthy was born, 1816 in Wheatley, Oxfordshire, England, married Mary Ann Viccars at Padbury in 1840.  His parents were Ezra Stallworthy and Betsy Perkins.

They sailed on the ship “Sir Fowell Buxton” which as you know was wrecked, and arrived in Port Phillip (Melbourne) on the ship “Richard”.

I really just wanted to get in touch again.

Regards and Best Wishes

Dear Koromo,
I just came across your enquiry on the Edward Hutton Stallworthy and families emigration to Australia.

I posted the info on the First Families years ago.  I actually have a copy of the passenger list for the "Richard" as well as some information on their departure from UK on the "Sir Fowell Buxton" which was apparently shipwrecked.  They joined "Richard" at Val Paraiso in Chile.

I have a lot of info, far from complete on the family in Australia.

I have some information on their Buckinghamshire family however I am looking for more.

I would like to hear from you.  Keep in touch

Regards

Jeff Thorne
