Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Unknown place on military history sheet
« on: Saturday 12 April 25 04:20 BST (UK)  »
Help please to decipher the unknown places on this extract from my grandfathers military history

According to the instructions on the form countries should be listed and home used for all the UK
Which if adhered means the unknowns are countries?

I can read Home, India, Unknown, Mesopotamia and something else?, unknown, Malta, Home, India

The unknowns are for shorter periods, as is Malta, if that helps. 7,25, & 22 days respectively.

Thanks

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Muzaffarnagar in India.
« on: Thursday 10 April 25 05:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi

A restoration please for the photos of my grandad in India in the 1920's
These are different from the 'postcard' type I have just uploaded as they appear to be actual photos, no postcard printing on back, and have discoloured and worn very differently to the other 'postcard'

Does anyone know why the difference in the use of media?

Grandad was in the Duke of Cornwall's light infantry in India. The other post on the postcard had words that said it was Muzaffarnagar in India. but I am not sure if this is the same place.

No info on the back

Thanks

Hi

This is the Duke of Cornwall's light infantry regimental police in camp on a march in Muzaffarnagar in India. The words on the back of the photo/postcard (unsent) which also names my grandfather as 3rd from left

Thanks

Thanks for the comments and I appreciate the need to treat any 'hints' based on other peoples genealogical research with caution

My question was about the level of the DNA match as with 4th great grandfather as MRCA 5th cousin is the most likely match

in this case I have researched my tree and am comfortable with the genealogical facts my question was on the DNA results

Of course, the greater the cM the greater the certainty but what about 5th cousins matches at 22 and 20cM?

Hi all
Some help please with a question on the theory of family relativity in My Heritage

I have been researching my GG grandfather Rowland White 1851 death unknown for sometime

The complication with Rowland is that he was married under a different name in 1877, was in the 1881 census and then does not appear anywhere else

I have a number of DNA cousins from my GG grandmothers line within ancestry which is where I tested. However at that site I have no White DNA cousins above Rowland to confirm Rowland is actually my genetic ancestor.

I have added my ancestry test to My Heritage and discovered a number of other DNA cousins the majority of which link well with my ancestry results.
I have more than one theory of family relativity results on other branches of my tree.

The good news is that I have two matches at 5th cousin level which I can trace to my GGGG grandfather William Green b 1805 as the MRCA.  That is Rowlands grandfather.
The matches both appear as Theory of family relativity matches and descend from different children of my GGGG grandfather.  One match is 22cM and the other is 20cM
The shared matches of these two did not add anything, all being of approximately the same values, 4 5th cousin range.

Is this a good enough match to say I am genetically descended fro William Green and hence Rowland is my GG grandfather

Thanks for any advice

Armed Forces / Role of regimental police
« on: Thursday 27 March 25 02:22 GMT (UK)  »
My grandad was with the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry

I have just applied for his service record so a 20-30 day wait

I have a number of facts from various sources and some confusion as to which Battalion he was actually in.  It appears he was in both the 1st and the 2nd during his service from 1919 to 1926.

One undated fact I have is a postcard of him in India, unsent, with his picture on the front and some writing on the back.  The words say;
Regimental police at camp in Muzaffangar on the march.
3rd dial from the left. (My grandad was in the picture third from the left.)

My best assumption is that this is between 1923 and 1926

His discharge clearly states from 1st Battalion (undated but should have been 1926 for 7 year service), in the 1921 census he was in D company 2nd Battalion

My question is the use of the regimental police statement rather than the battalion
What was the role of the regimental police and were the personnel separate units or part of the battalions given the battalions were in different countries.

Thanks for any info
