Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: My hampshire names

HI, There is an East Dean about 5-6 miles from Sherfield English, which would probably be the most likely location of Isaac.

I'm presuming the East Dean you mention is the one near Chichester?

Vbond is a relative of my other half. They both descend from Hester Moody.  I haven't really looked into the Moody part of the family.

Thank you for the info, I hadn't realised there were 2 East Dean's.  I've already looked at Isaac and Martha and it's  making sense.  Isaac is my 5 G grandfather.  So pleased I saw this chat, it's put me on the right track.

Jericho,
I know this is an older thread but I am a newbie and have only just found it.

I too have Moody relatives from the Lockerly area. My Hester moody was married at Sherfield English in 1797, where I believe she was baptized in1775. I have 2 of her siblings baptized at East Dean. James in 1764 and Pheobe 1766. Their parents were Isaac and Martha married at East Dean in 1763. Do these fit into your family?

vbond

Hi vbond
I think we may both be looking into the same family. My ancestor is Stephen Moody, born 1769, son of Isaac Moody of Sherfield English.  I also have his brother Jesse 1768 Sherfield English.  I've not been able to uncover which Isaac Moody this is.  3 possibilities are 1727 Titchfield, 1738 East Dean or 1727 Corsham.  All roughly the same distance from Sherfield English.  Could you help with the East Dean connection please?

Hi Barry
Thanks for reply.
Samuel Levi Vivash was the son of Arnold and they stayed in Hampshire.  Awbridge and Bramdean I think.  Ive recently noticed there's a David who moved to Tottenham though.  Will now go and check if I've got Walter Levi in my tree.  Hope you can find the photo, thanks again. Janice

Update:  yes I've got him, he's Arnold's brother.

I'm very late in seeing this thread but I hope Barry is still on this site.  Samuel Levi Vivash is my gt grandfather and I'd love to know where I could find the photo he mentions please.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Isaac Gibson, Sea Captain
« on: Tuesday 03 November 20 22:27 GMT (UK)  »
It is interesting that, of the "Prince" children, Charles and Elizabeth also named their father as Isaac Gibson, sea captain, on their marriages. (Mary's brother John named his father as Isaac Gibson deceased, master mariner).

The 1871 census shows all the children as Gibson, and the only Mary is the one listed as aged 12. So I too am coming round to the conclusion that the Mary who married Thomas Barnes was the one baptised as Mary Prince in 1860, and that she misrepresented her age on marriage.
Hopefully I can clear up why Charles named Isaac as his father.  Charles Prince Gibson was my 2g grandfather, his daughter was Edith Gibson.  I share dna with descendants of Isaac's sister Jane. That seems fairly conclusive proof that Isaac was Charles's father.

Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Coach and Horses - Handbridge

Hi
I've googled 17 Handbridge, where the pub used to be.  Unfortunately I don't see where I can attach the screenshots of the map and street view.  If you try yourself you can see the building is a little shop called Revive.

Hi
My 4th gt grandmother was possibly the publican of the Coach and Horses.  I've copied this from my search:

The Coach & Horses (no. 17), landlord in 1778 William Ball, in 1809 Daniel Gibson, in 1818-20 G Williams, in 1822-3 J Williams, in 1828 Joseph Sadler, in 1840 John Jones, in 1850 Elizabeth Jones, in 1871 George Edwards, in 1880 Robert Webb, in 1895 T Richards, in 1902 Mrs H Webb, in 1910 Mrs M Moore, in 1920 John Patten. The licence was withdrawn in 1922

Hope it helps.  The pub is no longer there.  I can think of only 4 or 5 pubs left in Handbridge nowadays.  The actual Flint Mountain is at least 20 miles from Chester, in Wales so I'm not sure of that connection.  I have not heard of any area still known as that around Chester.  However if the C&H is where I think it was there was an area called the Rock nearby.  It's a sheer guess but maybe it was jokingly called Flint mountain by locals.

Regards
Janice
