Yes. The 27th was when she was baptised

Hi Colin,
Marion Cleland’s birth notice is on Scotland’s People,

27/05/1750 CLELAND, MARION (Old Parish Registers Births 625/ 10 277 Bothwell) Page 277 of 542

I see the record you mention.

MARION CLELAND 27/05/1750 Bothwell
THOMAS CLELAND/ANNA LOWDOUN

Was the date you posted (13 May 1750) her birth on the record

Hi Colin,
Thanks for that suggestion. Much appreciated. I will check it out.
Thanks,
Stuart

Although about 25 miles from Pettain, I would have thought this was a better match for Robert but more research will be required.

ROBERT TURNER  - JAMES TURNER/CHRISTIAN CROMBIE    29/10/1738   Heriot

Neale,
No, they don’t.

Do any of those 11 children have a second / middle name?

The only birth I see for Mary n Scotland on SP in that year is below, where did your record come from?

CLELAND   MARY   GEORGE CLELAND/KATHARIN SMITH    06/05/1750   Eastwood

Oops, sorry, a typo! It should read 1733.

The children are:
Agnes 1773-1774
James 1777-1777
Christian 1779-1850
Robert 1780-1849
Janet 1783-1871
Marion 1785-
William 1786-
Margaret 1788-
Mary 1791-
Joseph 1792-1861
Elizabeth 1795-1875.

Marion/Mary Cleland’s parents are Thomas Cleland (1728-?) and Anna Lowdoun (1730-?)

Sorry for confusing things

Lanarkshire / Robert Turner (1750-1796) a miller at Hyndford
« on: Friday 25 September 20 08:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am looking for some help re my 4xgreat grandfather, Robert Turner, a miller from Hyndford, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Research by my late uncle in the 1960s had him as 1750-1796, when he died doing a brave deed at the celebrations after the naval Battle Of Camperdown (off Netherlands). This battle happened in Oct 1797!
I can’t find birth or death records for him for these dates on SP.
I have him marrying Marion (Mary) Cleland on 25/11/1773 at Pettinain, Lanarkshire. They had 11 children together.
I have found a Robert Turner b 12 Aug 1773 in Lanarkshire. From that his parents would be Archibald Turner and Margaret Wallace.
Any ideas or assistance would be much appreciated. It’s another brick wall for me just now.

Antrim / Re: Martha Sloan (c1820) and siblings went to Dunbar, Scotland

Thanks, Elwyn. I’ll have a look there. Thanks for your help.
Stuart

The 1803 agricultural census (which is on Bill McAfee’s site) lists just 1 Sloan household in Loughguile parish. That was occupied by Widow Sloan who lived in Kingarve (Kingarriff). Possibly a relation.

http://billmacafee.com

You haven’t said what denomination the Sloan family was but none of the 3 main denominations has any records for the early 1800s save for the Church of Ireland (Episcopalian) which has baptisms for 1802 – 1814.  So there‘s probably no record of Martha’s baptism if she was born in Loughguile around 1820-1824.

No Coleman households in Loughguile in 1803.

Griffiths Valuation for 1861 lists 1 Sloan household in Loughguile, headed by a John Sloan. He lived in Castlequarter though he also had land nearby in Lavin Lower & Ballyveely Upper.  Sloan does not appear to have been a common name in Loughguile.

Hi CaroleW,
Yes, she married Robert Marr in Dunbar, Scotland. I ways hoping to make headway back up the tree and into Antrim, NI.
Thanks for your help.
Stuart

Hi

Who did she marry & where?  There is a Martha Sloan marriage in 1852 Dunbar to Robert Marr.  1861 census shows her b Ireland 1824
