Family History Beginners Board / James Leeson 1826 - 1900
« on: Tuesday 16 April 24 13:19 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information on James Leeson, married to Sarah (nee Pearl) and their family. They had seven children (poor Sarah!), and  his father, Benjamin, was a tailor in East End of London.
Thanks

Thanks again for this, I think you've nailed it with the offspring. I know from my brother-in-law's research that Ebineezer was a tailor and his nephew was his apprentice.
I've just unearthed some previous info sent to me which throws light on Ann. Benjamin and Ebinezer gave evidence against their half brother James Moland (who often used the surname Leeson) in a fraud case at the Old Bailey. He was the son of their mother by her second husband.
He was sentenced to deportation in 1843, but instead was imprisoned on a prison ship for 2 years.

Given by someone else -  can't remember the source

I'm not sure, as I have lost the original message, when my computer had a fit, but I put the name into my tree at the time so I assume it was correct. However, as you say if her death certificate had the surname as Leeson, she didn't remarry.
Thanks for your help - it's much appreciated

Sorry I seem to have used the wrong place. They were born in the Uk and their children lived in Bethnal Green in the East End of London. Three of the children were in the tailoring trade, so it's quite possible their father was too. I'm interested in what became of Ann,left with 5 children at the age of 34. Did she remarry?

Hello,
I'm looking for any information re the above couple, of whom I'm the 7th generation. I have the 1841 census info on their 5 sons, 3 of them were in the tailoring trade, but I have no info on them.
Any information gratefully received.
Thanks

Thanks Shaun J, obviously my suppositions and my aunt's recollections are wrong, I never thought to check the maiden name of my uncle's mother.
That's put me on the right track - Harvey

Thanks to all for your responses and my apologies, I should have said that the reason I favored the 1861 Census in Edinburgh is that my aunt said that Albert came from Edinburgh. That is why I didn't consider the Kent data to be likely. Also, Coldstream, Berwickshire and Cavers, Roxboroughshire are close to the English border. Both Thomas, the possible father and their first born Janet were born in England, whilst the rest of the children were born in Cavers, which suggests after marrying they lived with Thomas' family and after starting their own family they moved to Cavers.
According to my aunt,  Albert was married to Elizabeth Campbell b1890, but I can find no record of there marriage.
