Thanks aghadowey for the links to the birth certificates. I also didn't know Pearl was a nickname for Margaret/Margaretta so that is super helpful information!

Hello GarethinWA
Thanks so much for reaching out - it definitely sounds like we have a connection here. Similar to yourself, I've had very little information passed down through the generations on this side of the family. My grandfather was quite young when his mother (Margaretta Woods Shegog) died so he knew very little about her. I would be keen to share what details I have gathered with you.
Julie

Thanks so much for reaching out Lisa - I just saw your posts.
I have not heard that story about Tillie so thank you for sharing. I do believe Charlotte (Lotte), Tillie and Margaretta's sister, was also a nurse as this is listed as her occupation on her marriage certificate and numerous passenger lists. I also think Sinclair and Margaret's son Robert Woods Shegog ended up in South Africa as he dies in Pretoria in 1970 so the connection to that part of the world seems quite strong for the family. I look forward to sharing my family details with you.

Hi Denis
Thank you so much for your response, I am so glad to hear from you. I did have a strong feeling that Margaretta was named after her grandmother but I have not been able to find any records to prove that, due (I'm guessing) to how long ago it was and the existence of any such records. I did know that James and Samuel were listed in John's will as receiving the family farm but I didn't know that Margaret bought it off him, so that is super interesting.
Sinclair is buried with his son and daughter-in-law in the grounds of the Kilcronaghan Parish Church but there is no much mention on the headstone of Margaret being buried with him but it is more than possible that she is.
I didn't realise the Cousley's came to Australia - many of Sinclair's siblings settled in Victoria so I have been researching the Shegog's that came to Victoria but maybe I need to start researching the Cousley line here too.
I would be really keen to share information with you.
Thanks again, Julie

I have James Hamilton Shegog with a birth year of 1806 too and have often wondered if they were twins, unless I have the wrong birth year for Mary Ann.

Hi Peggy

So great to find someone currently researching this family.

There was quite an age difference between Margaretta and Isaac. On my grandfather’s birth certificate Margaretta’s age is listed as 43 and Isaac’s as 29. Hamilton does feature amongst many of the descendants but I am yet to find out where this comes from, possibly via Margaret Woods (mother of Margaret Cousley).

Actually,  I think three sisters came to Australia.  Margaret (1817-1901) - married twice: Robert Glendinning in 1843 and then Pietro Yoler in 1866 and dies in Beechworth, Victoria. Mary Ann Hamilton Shegog (1806-1890) - married twice: Robert Neely in 1850 and then Thomas McBurney in 1855 and she dies in Port Melbourne, Victoria. Matilda (1827-1906) – marries Samuel Blair in 1853 and dies in Campbells Creek, Victoria in 1906.

It would be great to keep sharing with you? Do you have an online tree or have you done a DNA test?

Regards, Julie

Hello from Australia. Your timing is impeccable as I too posted about the Shegog family in June but have only just seen your posts. I am descendant from Margaretta Woods Shegog who married Isaac Clark. They married in July 1908 and boarded a boat from London to Wellington, New Zealand where they lived for a while before moving to Melbourne, Australia. Around 1916, whilst Isaac was serving in the war, Margaretta did take her two children (one being my grandfather) to visit her sisters in British Columbia. As far as I am aware, Margaretta’s father, Sinclair had four brothers (George, John, Robert and William) and two sisters (Margaret and Matilda) that came to Australia. I would be happy to share any information I have about this branch of my family. Regards Julie
