Hello Betty
Nice surprise to hear from you! Yes, Mairi Anne was my mother. I know very little about your branch of the family - my records only show that your Colin Edmond had one son named Colin who married Pat and had two children Janet and Jamie. Where do you fit in?

Monica's posts above have been very helpful in tracing ancestors, but I have hit a dead end after Farquhar's parents and in-laws.

Do you know anything about Colin Edmond's other siblings, Jessie, John, James, Dougald, Simon Fraser, Katie and Tillie? Let's trade what information we have. My e-mail is *

Thanks - John

Ayrshire / Hutchison/McGavin in Dalrymple, Ayr
« on: Tuesday 03 April 07 00:53 BST (UK)  »
Alexander Hutchison and Ann "Annie" McGavin, were married 31 Jan 1804 in Dalrymple, Ayr. I am trying to find information about their ancestors and children.

ScotlandsPeople has their marriage record but apparently it does not show their parents' names. The Dalrymple OPR (a great site!) shows the marriage record with Annie's parish as "Stair" and also shows their three children, Mary b.1804, John b.1806 and William b.1808.

Our family records show John was born 19 May 1806 in Barbiston, Dalrymple, emigrated to Canada about 1833 and farmed in Quebec. Census data show his religion as Free Church Presbyterian. I am one of his 480 (or more) descendants in Canada.

I am guessing that Alexander and Annie were born about 1782 but have had no luck finding birth records on ScotlandsPeople, LDS or the Dalrymple OPR site. Any help on where else to search would be much appreciated.

Thanks Monica

Have been unable to find any record of Farquhar Macdonald's birth or marriage. In the 1841 census  his age is given as 40 and in 1851 as 54, i.e born 1801 or 1797. But I can't find him on LDS, Scotlands People or any other searches.

Can you please tell me how you found that his parents were John Macdonald and Mary McRae?

Ross & Cromarty / Re: Is Dochpollo near Dingwall?

Thanks for the clue that Dochpollo is derived from Davochpollo.

Used "mamma metasearch" to find Davochpollo in the History of the Mackenzies by Alexander Mackenzie.

He tells us that his ancestor, Alexander Mackenzie of Hilton inherited the Davochmaluag estate in 1776. The adjoining properties of Davochpollo and Davochcairn were previously acquired by his father, John Mackenzie, second of Brea. Alexander combined the three properties into one, and gave it the name of Brea, after the former estate of the family in Ferintosh.

I see the Heights of Brae is near Fodderty. Is there a Brea in the neighbourhood? Or has Mackenzie's Brea become Heights of Brae over time?

Many thanks for your replies.
I have attempted to attach a scanned image of the entry.
Hope it is legible.

Ross & Cromarty / Is Dochpollo near Dingwall?
« on: Wednesday 27 September 06 19:23 BST (UK)  »
The Register for Marriages in Fodderty shows George Dingwall married Mary Cameron on 19 June 1840. Her residence is shown as "Hts of Dochcarty".

His place of residence is hard to read - the handwriting is a bit faded. It looks like "Dochpollo" but I can't locate a place with this name. George was born in Lemlair in 1819 and his father, John, was born in Heights of Dochairty about 1788, so I assume it is near Dingwall.

The letter p may be incorrect. Does anyone know where Dochpollo or Doch_ollo is?

Cavan / Killeshandra - Simeon Henery born 1720
« on: Saturday 15 July 06 19:51 BST (UK)  »
Family records show that Simeon Henery was born about 1720 in Drumbess, County Cavan, Killeshandra parish and had a son Thomas.

Simeon's grandson, John, emigrated to Canada in 1811.
We can't find any record of Simeon's family.

Does someone out there know where his birth and marriage records could be registered?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Ross & Cromarty / Re: lookup dingwall/bain marriage 1813

I received a copy of Banns and Marriages for 18th June 1813 and am puzzled by the language. The letters are a little difficult to decipher but by comparing them to the rest of the page it looks like:

"May 29 Were contracted John Dingwall Lught of Dochcairn and Ann Bain Leadohuuch and married the 18th of June"

Lught apparently means "light". I found a reference to a place named Dochairn on the internet but no Dochcairn. But what does Lught of Dochcairn mean?

The Leadohuuch may be Lead ohuuch (two words) or possibly Seadohuuch (no capital L's on the page for comparison) but a search on the internet did not provide any matches to these words.

The other seven entries on the page are straightforward - just the names of the parties and their parishes. Were Dochcairn and Leadohuuch also the names of parishes?

Any help would be appreciated.

John
