I have been researching contemporary newspaper articles about life in the Edinburgh City Poorhouse at Craiglockhart, which opened in 1870. To reduce the stigma, birth in the Poorhouse was shown as the address of the gate house at 144 Comiston Road.
I've collated them into a fascinating book with Victorian photographs and colour illustrations. It is a rare opportunity to hear the voices of the poor as well as the officials' version.
