This is a very old post/thread but I’m new here and John Mackenzie and Jane/Jean McLean were my 2 x great grandparents.
John was born circa 1826 and died 10 June 1894
Jane was born circa 1831 and died 30 Jan 1894…..both are buried in Tomnahurich Cemetery, Inverness along with children Alexander 1858-60, Grigor 1866 and Catherine 1863-77.
As previously noted they had 5 children. I descend from their first born John, born 25 July 1855, died Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia 5 January 1916. He emigrated in 1876, he was a merchant seaman (as was his father) although he is listed as a lighthouse keeper/pilot at Sea Hill, Curtis Island for several years later in life. Married Alice Sinclair 1866-1911. They had 6 children, Donald, John, George, Archibald, Catherine and Jean. Alice’s parents were Donald Sinclair and Catherine Cairns.
I am trying to establish where John and Jane were born and who their parents were. Unfortunately their death certificates contain very little. No forenames and no mother’s maiden name on John’s…simply that his father was a ferryman and Jane’s notes her father was John McLean a farmer [crofter?]. The informant for both was listed as a friend (who owned the residence in which they lived) Donald Stewart.
I’m not convinced they were both born in the same area despite what’s listed on the 1861 census.
John (Jnr’s) eldest son, Donald Stewart McKenzie, believed his grandmother’s family were from Little Lochbroom, I’ve a letter he wrote seeking help to locate them in 1930 that says just this.
I’m also wondering if Knockan on the 1861 census might be Knockban?
If anyone who helped with the original query is still here I’d very much appreciate it, or any anyone with any fresh ideas or suggestions?
Thanks in advance, JazzaD
