They were possible flax seed growers

That is so interesting thank you. How can you tell? Is that local knowledge / allocated acreage / landlord?

I found the Irish Flax Growers List 1796 available online: https://www.failteromhat.com/flax/donegal.php

There are 3 Doghertys listed at Inch: James, George and John. 1796 would pre-date my current research and be a further generation back. It would be great if I could confirm a link.

For anyone looking at Dogherty / Doughertys in Donegal - there are plenty of others on there!

Dogherty James at Grange on Griffiths valuation (different spelling of name)

Hi rathmore

Thank you for the reply. Yes I found the same and believe this is my ancestor. I wasn't sure if there was any way to further progress this so any tips would be appreciated! I am aware there were some interim records which showed updates to tenants and that there are some landlord records but haven't got any further with this.

Just adding for the benefit of others reading, that this might be the death of Minnie White nee Dougherty.
Minnie White   12th January 1950   61   Female   Larne

The following White children.    MMN Dougherty/Dogherty/Doherty

Agnes Elizabeth White born 5 August 1911

Minnie Priscilla White born 22 May 1914

Eleanor Mulholland White born 25 March 1921

Hi Kiltaglassan

I have the date of death confirmed for Minnie White nee Dougherty as 1975. I hadn't been able to identify Eleanor so this is really interesting - thank you. I had the other two sister's details but the third daughter went by "May" so hadn't connected this record. I have their dates of death.

I think Robert Doherty had a brother James who could be James Doherty c1847-1897 who married Jane Dixon and had 7 children, Sarah, Robert, Thomas, John, Catherine, Martha and Alice. I have birth / census records but haven't found their marriage record. I note the 1901 census shows Jane and children as Roman Catholic while Robert and family are Irish Church so wonder if it was a cross-religion marriage and they married elsewhere or if this could be why I can't find it?

Hi Kiltaglassan

A belated welcome to RootsChat, jubz  :)

Here are some links that might help others to help you.

Thanks for the welcome!  :) and thank you so much for taking the time to do the searches. Apologies, I should have perhaps included more details in my earlier post! I have done quite a bit of research but have hit the wall (mainly with the limitations of records available).

So far I have been using all the available online resources, would anyone have any tips for the next steps? Would parish records for this area be held in PRONI or in Dublin - some pre-partition records are Donegal, others are Londonderry?

Also would anyone know if there any physical records held locally on Inch? In addition to birth/deaths/marriage, is there a way to access burial records for this area?

Many thanks

Jubz

Hi ktravers

Hi. Still here! I don’t recognise any of those names but there were a few Doherty families in Inch. I’ll see if do have any info that might help.

Thanks so much for the reply. I'd be really interested if we find a crossover. I have done quite a bit of research but with so many Dohertys in the area I can't confirm which are extended family! I thought it was worth a punt with the link to Grange.

Hi

Hopefully the users on this feed are still active after all this time!

I am also tracing Dohertys from Grange, Inch, Donegal and after seeing your post I wonder if we have any cross overs?

I have:
Alfred Dougherty 1891-1938
Alfred's father = Robert Doherty c1851-1912
Alfred's grandfather = James Doherty c1790-1882
I've got some details of siblings and marriages and can't see a John Doherty on there but wonder if there is any commonality given the close proximity?
