Me and my father have done DNA tests on Ancestry, so might help you out (or not) with the separate family theory.

I’m not sure if anyone will see this as the thread is so old but I’m also interested in the Latours of India.

Claudine Rose Latour was my 3 x Great Grandmother who married John Lester Noel that you mentioned in the initial post.

I was wondering if you’ve got any further with your research? I believe Claudines father was Jean Pierre Latour Junior who married a Jeanne Rose, and his father the senior. I’m yet to verify this though.

Thanks for all you help guys. It’s helped confirm everything for me, and even set me down a new path of research with Bacons and Hollands. For some reason I had Jane Dawson down as George Hiles mother (along with pretty much all of Ancestry) Now it all makes much more sense.

birth registration
BARTHORPE, SUSANNAH       Mother: COBB
GRO Reference: 1853  M Quarter in EAST RETFORD UNION  Volume 07B  Page 11

1861 and 1871 census in Treswell
Possibly that is Susannah under the name “Hannah”
-   with her parents George and Hannah (her age in 1871 his not quite right)

You need to get her father's name and occupation from the marriage certificate.

I thought this also, but Hannah is still living with her parents in 1881, Susannah is married to George Hiles and is listed with him in 1881. I’ll have to see about getting a copy of their marriage certificate

Nottinghamshire / Barthorpe Family

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out someone I’m having real trouble with placing.

I have a Susannah Barthorpe who married a George Hiles in July 1876 in East Retford. Ancestry is directing me towards her parents being George Barthorpe and Hannah Cobb but something just doesn’t ring right. I can find census records for Susannah after her marriage to George, in 1881 listed as born in Treswell, but I can not find her in the Census’ for the Barthorpe/Cobb family previously. I can’t find her in any previous census. I don’t understand how she is a part of that family. I think I must be missing something fairly obvious as many people have her listed in that family.

I can see a birth record for a Susannah Barthorpe being born in East Retford for 1852, if that is the correct person. But then nothing on the 61 or 71 census.

I also have questions about her daughter Lucy Bacon Hiles, she was born the same month as Susannah and George were married, couple with Bacon as a middle name makes me think George might not be the father. But I suppose that’s a question for another day, and maybe could be answered by finding some certain facts on her mother Susannah.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi, thanks for your help.

That was Alice’s mum, Elizabeth Mary Peters. Could you point me in the right direction of the will please?

Still at a complete dead end with this. Have no idea what happened to Donald and or Alice. It’s rather frustrating.  :(

I’m not sure Alice did, but my grandad and his brother definitely did. I’m not sure when but probably the early 50’s. He married my gran in 1956.

Hi,

I’m currently trying to find out where my Great Grandfather ended up and was wondering if anyone had any leads I could explore as I’m a beginner at this and I’m out of ideas.

He was born in India to John Henry Nichol and Mary Evans Judd in abt 1898 and married my great grandmother Alice Mabel Noel in 1931 in Calcutta. They had two sons that I know of, Kenneth Gordon Nichol and John Beresford Nichol.

I know in 1918 he was at the Officers School of Instruction at the Bishop Cotton School in Bangalore, records suggest he was in the Indian army reserve for officers. In 1919 he was a witness at his fathers second marriage.

That’s about all I know, I’m finding it particularly difficult to trace my family in India so any help would be much appreciated.
