Oh it seems I have those as Deborah's parents in my tree. It's William and the daughters that are causing me problems :S  ???

Thank you I will check the link for Deborah out. I never think to look on family search, partly because I don't like it and partly because it's never a place I think of looking. I wonder if they have the marriage.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Penrith Stockdale/Jackson

Hello,

This family is giving me the biggest headache right now.

I've struggled to find a marriage for William Stockdale (abt. 1806) and Deborah Jackson(abt.1807-1842). I have 1832 in my tree for a marriage but I suspect I've accidently copied that over from someone else as I can't find where I got that from.

This would be a second marriage as his first wife, Mary Bell, is buried in 1828.

I also don't know where he goes beyond his wife's death. The youngest children are in the workhouse in 1851. According to the 1841 census he was a shoe (I assume maker).

I have found 5 children for them but I'm questioning if that last 2 are the same person.

Jane Stockdale (abt.1834 -?) I have her as a dairy maid in 1851 but I'm struggling after that.
William Stockdale (1837-1907) - I think I'm ok with him.
John Stockdale (1840-1916) - my 2xggf
Mary Stockdale (1842-?) - I have a baptism but no birth record. I have nothing on her other than the baptism.
Isabella Stockdale (1842-?) I have a birth certifictae but no baptism. There's nothing to suggest these 2 were twins nor does she have a middle name of Mary. With some help I think I have her on the 1871 census as Isabella 'Stogdall/Stogdale' still in the workhouse as the 1851 and 1861 census.

Any help with any of the above would be very much appreciated as I don't think headache tablets are going to help ;)

PS William anwers no to 'whether born in the same county' so I've no idea where he came from and certainly don't have a baptism for him or any idea of his parents.

I did a DNA test a few years back. It's not really thrown a lot up for this side of the family.

Thank you for the replies.

It's been a while since I checked in here. I tend to look at family history over Xmas and into January.

Thank you it. It's good to have the facts of something you've been told :)

Durham / 1920s accident Easington Lane
« on: Saturday 11 February 23 01:55 GMT (UK)  »
I recently read 'Born of the Pit: The story of the BRICKGARTH'. It's about Easington Lane. It's where some of my family lived late 1800s into the early part of the 1900s

In the paper(not sure what to call it as it isn't a book and more than a leaflet) an accident is mentioned that involved a waggon and a child that was killed. Made me curious as I'm sure my grandmother mentioned something about an accident and a child being killed. It seems to have been in the 20s or possibly just before. It states :

'Looking at the Brickgarth of the 1920s....The old colliery railway line that bordered the South side, is in the process of being dismantled. A child had been killed with waggons on the line previously. It was this accident that speeded up the decision to stop its use.'

Just curious really but does anyone have more information? or a link to where I might find it? I did google but I'm starting to think I'm rubbish at using google, I never quite find what I want.

My grandmother appears to have taken the truth of things and distorted them a little. So my curiousity has me wondering if it was a relative of hers.

Durham Completed Look up Requests / Children in care 1940s
« on: Thursday 09 February 23 22:27 GMT (UK)  »
Were records kept of children put/taken into care in the 1940s?

If so, any idea what information they would have recorded? would it state the circumstances and/or how they ended up in care?(neglect, abandonment, poverty, abuse etc)

Most importantly is it possible to access those records?

My mother's older siblings ended up in care. My mother and her 2 younger brothers did too but I think she has some understanding of why. We knew of the older siblings but always thought their father(not the same as my mother's) had raised them but we recently discovered that wasn't the case. I'm curious but also as I've found one of those siblings (and a cousin) I think it'd be good for them to understand why. They were only a baby at the time.

Hi, Minnie Tuck was my grandmother. I already have her details. I'm trying to trace the children she left behind. I knew Mary had died, my mother is named after her. I just believed she had been in her mother's care and a young adult when she had died. I was surprised to find out she was a child and in care. I've found one of the siblings, a brother (which was the first time I'd heard the 3 siblings had been put in care), not sure where the sister ended up but the brother and sister did have contact as adults.

I've since found another sibling that no-one knew about. That birth certificate states that child was adopted. Not much hope of finding her or her family nor how to even begin to look for them. Would be nice to know that they had a happy life though ;)
