Cannot spot an Admiral Thomas Pickmore.
"Bye Gones" was a quarterly antiquarian publication

Yes, he named him wrongly, Francis. I have a lot on Vice Admiral Francis Pickmore, and thanks to you and others, have discovered his parents, William and Elizabeth, and his paternal grandfather, Ralph. Thanks again. Gabriel

Cheshire / Pickmore family of Middlewich, Chester

Hello everyone! Once again I am delving into my Pickmore ancestors who seem to have once been quite profuse but are now nearly extinct!

My latest conundrum is the parentage of Vice Admiral Francis Pickmore (1757-1818) an enterprising seaman, born and baptised in Chester:
Here are the basic details I have of him (there is much on him in the Naval archives)

His father, William Pickmore (possibly the owner of a dancing academy in Chester)
Married 22 January 1750, Holy Trinity, Chester, to Elizabeth Holland ca 1730, with
Elizabeth 1752
William 1754
Francis 1757-1818

Elizabeth and Francis both married and have descendance to this day.

My problem is trying to find the parents of both William and Elizabeth Holland. She might have been a member of the family of Holland of Mobberley, but I don't see her in this genealogy, so back to the drawing board with her! It is William Pickmore's parents that confounds me. I do know that he was part of the Pickmore family, but despite having a huge pedigree copied from the Chester archives, he does not seem to be in it.

As an intriguing aside:
John Pickmore/ Pickmere of Warrington, Wine merchant in 1818, received a gift of a Newfoundland dog from the ailing and soon to be deceased Admiral, his 'cousin', then Governor of Newfoundland - the first recorded dog of this breed in England ( I notified the Kennel club when I discovered this nugget). It so happens John Pickmore was a 2nd cousin of my ancestor Peter Jackson (+ 1811), man midwife and surgeon of Warrington - both had moved to Warrington from Middlewich. Peter Jackson was the seventh son of James Jackson, butcher, owner of the King's Arms, and salt mines, as well as farmer, and his wife Martha Pickmore. A bit of flesh to the Pickmore saga.

Anyhow, can anyone help me with the parents of Francis Pickmore?

Could I just clarify a few things?:

I can see the marriage between Sara Allexander and Raphe Pickmoore [sic] on 20th January 1688 in Middlewich, and their subsequent children:
Mary (1689)
Martha (1690)
Ralph (1692)
Ann (1695)
Hannah & Martha (1698) - no mother's name

But the only baptism I can see of a Sarah Alexander in Middlewich was on 24th January 1635; father is Humfrey Alexander. This cannot possibly be your Sarah, as she would not be able to bear children at 63. Is there another baptism I am missing?

Also, I imagine Sarah was born around 1657-1667, so how can her father be born c.1660? Did you mean he married around 1660?

Queenie  :)

Yes, I get your point Queenie! I think Humf was married c 1660 - but as you say it does not quite gel - apologies, by the way, for my tardiness, I am doing up a huge Victorian house and it is taking up a lot of time! I will think on and look up Merrells index which might help! Thank you for your input much appreciated.

Cheshire / Re: Arclid Hall Sandbach

Hi! As it happens I have recently discovered Arclyd/Arclyd Hall amongst my bevy of ancestors in the Middlewich/ Sandbach area. Arclyd was originally owned by a family of that name in the 12th century and then devolved by descent and purchase to various local notable families such as the Mainwarings, Lingards and Twemlows, some of which are my ancestors. The Hall seemed to have been pulled down and a large farm put in its stead.

Humfrey Alexander, of Middlewich, born c 1660, married Sarah Percival - They had at least one child, Sarah + 9/9/1727, who married 1687/88 my ancestor Randle/Ralph Pickmore. Does anyone have access to any further information on Humfrey and his wife Sarah?

Hello everybody,

Through my Cheshire yeoman family of Jackson of Middlewich I have discovered marriages that have led me to Derbyshire and Staffs!
I find I am descended from William Bowyer of Knipersley, who died in 1603, married to Anne Heywood, daughter of William Heywood of Stonylowe, gent, and Ann Beresford.
Try as I can, I cannot find anymore about this Heywood family - can anyone help?
