The Common Room / Re: William Joy c1850 - Dorset help with Unknown Birth and Death?

Hi all, thanks so much for your help with William.

Sorry for only thanking now - been moving back to uni.

Very interesting Neale1961 thank you!

I will try and contact the Dorset FHS and hopefully they can help me over email as I am a long way from Dorset  ;D.

Thanks Carole also.
If William did not die before Caroline remarried this will be the earliest case of this kind I have on my tree. An odd scenario, nobody with him in their tree knows anything about him.

Thanks again!

Thanks Carole, ill look into it  ;D.

Susan Joy lists father's occupation as Shoe Maker.
I had also wondered dying at sea, does that equal no death record in any form?

The Common Room / William Joy c1850 - Dorset help with Unknown Birth and Death?
« on: Monday 11 September 23 23:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Please would somebody be able to help me with a my 4th great grandmother's first husband please? I am struggling to find anything about him.
To start with her,
Her name was Caroline Lawrence. b1830.

She married a William Joy in 1849 in Bridport, Dorset. - The person I am trying to find out more, and his birth and death years.

In 1852, their daughter Susan Joy was born. She marks William Joy (deceased) on her marriage to
Charles Earey.

Then in October 1857, Caroline Joy marries Charles Mills in Axminster, Devon, United Kingdom.

This could put William Joy's death date anywhere between late 1851 and pre October of 1857.

Although I am not directly related to him I would still like to know more about him. I have checked FreeBMD and GRO but I am receiving no results.

Caroline was born in Bridport Dorset (place of first wedding), and died in Axminster, Dorset (place of second wedding). So didn't leave Dorset, and so I am unsure on wether William did too. All of Carolines other children (2nd marriage) were born in Lyme, Dorset, England, and Axminster. Susan was the only one born in Bridport.

Caroline Joy is living with her parents in 1851, and her husband does not live at the same adress, but I am yet to find a census for him in 1851.

I am assuming that William died and then Caroline Remarried, but if that is not the case, Susan Joy marks her father dead at her marriage in Oct 1874.

Many thanks for you time reading. I have hit a brick wall with William.

Edit: I can not see the marriage of Charles Mills and Caroline Joy to see if Caroline is regarded as a Widow. Although I am very much assuming that she was. I only can see their marriage on the Marriage Index.

Ah very interesting thank you all.

I am glad I had not stumbled upon Esther before.

Looks like I have John Wrong..
Stupid mistake on my part.
David and Charlotte married December 1906 and the John Wade in my tree was born July 1906, Possible, but unlikely it is David and Charlottes. I shall remove him thank you. Their first child must have been Arthur born October, which may explain why he put him on the census, as some of you have said, which all makes sense.

I had been told that there were more infant deaths in between Ethel born 1921 and Mary born 1928, but they may be mistaken.

Many thanks for your help.

The Common Room / Re: Infant deaths - include or exclude?

I always include infant or child deaths.

They are a part of my families journey, even if I never met such family as they existed long before me.

Although this was modern, my 2nd cousin thanked me for including her son who passed in infancy on my tree.

My 2nd Great grandma had 3 children who died in infancy and childhood, confirmed by birth certificates which my great grandma had kept a secret from my grandfather.

I even have some family photographs which include babies (still living in the photos  ;D) who died around 2/3, and so I have added both their names and their photographs to my tree so that they are not forgotten.

Including infant deaths provides to me a greater understanding of my families journey as well as who were commemorated through these infants names, many babies named after their grandparents.

It may make trees appear more cluttered, but to me, they are still a part of my family. In fact, I am glad in a way when I find an infant death. I am the only person in my family to be interested in family history. So finding a child or infant death I always think, when was the last time somebody thought of them, and so there they are, proudly on my tree!  ;D

I have even searched newspapers to give them a proper date of death instead of just a quarter in which the death was registered.

Wilfred is mine, my great grandfather

Mary also, as she reached adulthood and many of my family met her.

John and harry I have no way to confirm other than birth certificates, or news articles will look into further. I had assumed both were mine before you introduced me to this marriage! I am going to check David's siblings and cousins to see if there is an Albert marrying an Edith. John again was Charlottes father and I had just assumed they had had a John passing in infancy, and had reused this name for their later son, but John is a common name  ;D ;D ;D.

Thanks Carole.

but are available free on GRO online

Hi Carole, I am aware, but I believe they also had children (who passed young) past 1923 (which I believe is when mothers maiden name stops appearing) which is what I was referring to. Thanks  :)

There is another Wade/Sugden marriage in the North Bierley RD in 1912 ( Albert & Edith) so the 2 children b 1913 & 1915 could be theirs

Thank you for this, as I was completely unaware of this. Thank you!
I believe John is one of mine, as he is from before Albert and Edith marriage and Charlottes father was John, If it is the right child they also had a John in 1923 if I remember rightly, also called John but I may have to trace Albert and Edith's whereabouts due to this revelation to confirm further.

Arthur is mine.
And George and Sarah Ann too.

Esther is unknown to me as I had not encountered her birth on my search for the Wade's children, she definitely did not reach adulthood if it is one of my Wades.

Horace born 1915 and dying in 1917 is mine thanks to news articles to confirm, and luckily I have a picture of him!

edit: Oh and the 1913 one is mine too, he is my great grandfather  ;D

Thanks for introducing me to this revelation! I better further investigate those I have on my tree. Those who reached adulthood are easy, but my Aunt recounts the numerous infant deaths the family had.

Very sad if David did have cross out his son's name. He had a very hard life from what I am aware of which was later brought on by the war.

Thanks again. Will Investigate.

You have put 'I am certain that there are more to discover considering the 100 year period of anonymity with the GRO index.'   What period of anonymity are you referring to, please?

I am unsure as to wether anonymity is the right word.
I am unable to confirm that any wades born in Shipley, West Yorkshire, are there's without mothers maiden names which are only avaliable after a 100 year period. Although birth certificates would be able to confirm for definite but I am currently unable to purchase all wade Birth certificates registered in North Bierley during this period.

Although Caroles post may undermine all I have thought.
