Somerset / Re: Somerset family names
« on: Tuesday 07 May 24 21:24 BST (UK)  »
Hello Anne

Welcome to Rootschat. These people are in my husband's family.

Emily Godfrey b 1842 at Compton Dundon, parents John Godfrey 1819-1876 and Eliza Cox born in Wells 1818.  Emily  married George Witcombe b Meare.

Richard Godfrey b 1778, died 1851 both at Edington had at least 2 children.
John Godfrey b 1811 who moved to Puriton
Daughter Ann Godfrey baptised at Meare in 1813, she married John Whitcombe 10 October 1847.

If you write messages with what you know,  e.g. who married who and a date. The more info you give on your message, the more likely people are able to make a connection with their family. If you need any help looking something up, there are often people who will help.

Good luck. Heather
hello, heather, i have seen several gravestones with the names;
diment and dyment on in bridgwater
if you haven't known them already,
regards
Chris

Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: Burials at St John the Baptist Church, Bridgwater
« on: Monday 01 April 24 22:57 BST (UK)  »
Mary Ann Codrington died aged 58 in Jan/Mar 1874 in Bridgwater.

Is she buried in St John the Baptist Church's graveyard?

If so, please advise date of burial, and if anyone else was buried in the same grave.

Her widower husband John Codrington died aged 81 in Jan/Mar 1894 in Bridgwater  He was not buried in Bristol Road (St Johns) Cemetery which opened in 1878 so maybe he joined Mary Ann wherever she was buried.

If so, is there a plot/grave number?

For some reason, Somerset Trust has not published the burial registers of St John the Baptist Church, Bridgwater in Ancestry.com.

hello, i am in the town, i know where the church and graveyard is
on another website, i have found the names on records,
it suggests they are there, however no photo is supplied,
this could be because either there is a memorial plaque or stone or
cremation, or possibly if they were not identified at the time ?

when i am passing in the daytime, i will try and take a look in the grounds
or even inside ,
regards

hi, don't know if this helps, I too am trying to find this info and had some help from local undertakers H Biffen & Sons.. they have a copy of names, surnames only, of the old Wembden Road Cemetery..

Other wise I think it means a trip to Records Office in Taunton. try   www.somerset.gov for address, sorry I have not got it handy.

will come back here if I find anything new for you.

regards Denise

Somerset / Re: Washer family, possibly Somerset?
« on: Sunday 31 March 24 22:34 BST (UK)  »
It doesn't seem an unreasonable place to start looking at all, especially as you're right - a lot of the surname usage seems to concentrate/originate in that area of Somerset.  (Bear in mind, though, that any UK port might have an occasional ship going to a foreign port even if it was unusual, and that all British ports were closely connected by regular coastal traffic anyway, so it would be impossible to rule out all other locations for sure just on that basis.)

I also have two sets of Washer families from that area on my tree, and while one of my lines fades out before that, and the other is a sideline on another tree that I haven't been able to expand yet, my Washers also moved between the West Somerset coastal area, Bridgwater (another port) and Bristol. So it's possible I might be able to help give pointers with some of my own researches - although sadly I do not have a ready-made missing John to match your Boston runaway!

But if you want to send me a PM and maybe let me know a bit more, I'll see whether I can fish out anything useful for you.  Good luck with your searching anyway!  And while it's not the rarest name, it also isn't super common - so maybe even if we can never prove it, we might still be long lost cousins from a very long way back, who knows?   ;)

(Bear with me if I'm slow to respond at any point - I'm not always that well at the moment, but I will always still get back to you eventually.)
hi, i do some voluntary work in a cemetery, and this year have seen the names; Gadd , washer in bridgwater . 2024

Hi and welcome to RootsChat  :)

If you do a google search on  'Wembdon Road Cemetery'. You will find that there has been a project which has detailed all readable inscriptions on gravestones and has photos of virtually every grave. There is also a mapping facility. Not every grave is photographed as I know of a cousins grave which is not featured, yet I know is there. It is great if you live along way away as you can see the headstones without visiting.
The Cemetery started in 1851 but closed back in the 1970-1980 period. Cant remember which year exactly as I was still a kid then.

hi, there used to be 2 chapels there, a Victorian hexegon shaped one which disappeared many  years ago,  and a 2nd chapel which fell into ruin, and no longer there

If you position your cursor below the bottom
mark, you can add your text. It makes it very difficult for others to see if you are only re-quoting a previous post or trying to add something new to the thread. (I have highlighted your text addition in bold).

Then click on the button ‘Preview’ and scroll up to read what you have composed as a reply. If everything is OK, scroll back down and click ‘Post’.

Good luck!
hi yes maybe it could be attached to this post/ but i was initially intending to make a 1st general new post from myself, thanks
