Census and Resource Discussion / What and where else can i try?
« on: Thursday 06 July 23 16:07 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon
I'd like some advice on where else I can look for a particular marriage please. I've hunted and hunted, and even thought maybe they didnt get married, or were married to other people, and had to live together instead. In the end i've become 'search blind' if you understand what i mean and so i thought maybe someone here can get me back on track.

the marriage is between
Charles William Ward born 27 Jan 1857 in Deptford, London, Packer. Father - Charles Stephen Ward, Pork Butcher. Mother - Elizabeth Sarah Townsend. Both parents born in Deptford, London.
and
Sarah Ann Joyce born 6 July 1855 in Bow, London. Father - Joseph Joyce, Engine driver at factory, born in Shellow, Willingale, Esesx. Mother - Eleanor Penten, born Gresham, Norfolk.

I have checked all sorts of areas, even omiting a parish name when looking up marriage records to give as broad a search as possible. I've tried foreign records. I've looked at siblings of William and Sarah to see where they all married. i've ordered birth certificate information for their children to look at Sarah's surname details.
I think I have narrowed their possible marriage date down to either 1874 or 1875 because.....
Sarah Ann was a witness to her brother Joseph's marriage on 2 Aug 1874. She signed the register using the surname Joyce, so was not married then.
William and Sarah's first child registered was Clara Louisa Ward born 30 Oct 1875. On the birth documents under the heading 'mother' were the words Sarah Ann Ward formerly Joyce.

I know it's possible Sarah just used the surname Ward and wasnt married, but if she was then her marriage to William took place between Aug 1874 and Oct 1875.

It could be that the records were destroyed but I'm hoping they've just been accidentally missed from any transcribing. So is there some advice that anyone can give me to try and find this record. Anywhere else I can look, apart from physically travelling to look at various parish records? Unfortunately I'm unable to do that at the moment.

Thank you all :-)

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Catherine Lyons
« on: Monday 03 September 18 19:19 BST (UK)  »
Well I have to say a big thank you to everyone. Some of the facts given I have already looked at like the 1841 census. Also I was aware that some trees on Ancestry are showing Aaron Gomes Da Costa as marrying Rachel but I know that my Aaron married Catherine because he is cited in his sister Frances (my direct ancestor) death notice in 1893. The address of Aaron in that notice is the same as Aaron married to Catherine in the 1891 census. Hope that makes sense?

Thank you for the thoughts about Julia's surname being Valentine. That was one of the possible surnames I had marked down because the only Emanuel Lyons, (brother of Catherine in the 1841 census) shown in the GRO has the mother's surname of Valentine. I never thought to check the name Kitty, and thought I had checked and tried all the variations I could! I cant seem to match up Catherine's siblings Elizabeth and Leah with a mother's surname of Valentine as yet but will carry on searching. Also interesting is the possibility of even more siblings Lewis and Abraham.

The 1911 census for Aaron and Catherine states 'no children' so that of course answers my question about other people's trees on ancestry.com saying they had a child Aaron.(Why didn't I think of that!). I did find that census sadly amusing as whoever filled in the details stated they were 'too old to work' a couple of times. It touched me to be honest.

Once gain thank you so much everyone. The tips and advice and details have given me a lot to sort through and I really appreciate the help.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Catherine Lyons
« on: Sunday 02 September 18 21:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone
I am doing a bit of research about the siblings and their families of my direct ancestors. One of these, Aaron Gomes da Costa (born about1835 in Spitalfields) married a Catherine Lyons and it is her I am trying to find more information about.
Their marriage certificate 1st August 1860 in Whitechapel shows Catherine's father to be Alexander Lyons, a General Dealer. They appear to be of Jewish faith considering who married them, and this would tally with many of my direct paternal ancestors. I have also found Catherine (born about 1838), her parents Alexander and Julia, and some siblings, in the 1841 census. from there, apart from finding Catherine and Aaron in later census from 1881 onwards, I have drawn a blank on all of the others. I cant find a birth for Catherine or her siblings. I can find births for all the names but the mother's surnames are all different.
Can anyone help me at least narrow down Catherine's birth or her mother's maiden name, or even some proof of her siblings birth? I have seen some ancestral trees on Ancestry.com which suggest a child was born to Catherine and Aaron but again I am not convinced as I cant find definative proof.
Thank you so much

Thanks for that. Stupid me...i have looked at variations on names before but didnt think to try it this time derrr! looking at the census pages they do seem to match up although Louisa was actually called Mary Louisa but it certainly seems like a match. i have sent for Emma's birth certificate so if i am lucky it will clarify her mother's name.

Much appreciated and now, as i have a day off work, i will have a look for John Chaplin's parents. I know he is right because of Emma's marriage certificate lol.

You have put a smile on my face and given me some ideas so thank you very much.

Okay i have now found that there is a strong possibility Emma had a twin sister Mary Louisa. They both had the same father, John, named on Emma's marriage certificate so i am pretty confident of this. I just still cant find them in the 1891 census. Has anyone got any ideas please. :-(

Hiya
Yes they are indeed a complicated family, belonging to my husband lol. I dont think i have any with those dates that match although the names of some run in my  husbands tree. The first time any Gurney appears in Herts is when an Edmond Gurney b1795 in Buckinghamshire and his wife Sarah Holliman b1798 in Bovingdon, Herts (which is close to Hemel) have their 10 children, all born in Bovingdon. Does any of that ring a bell at all. Sorry to be vague lol.

Radnorshire Lookup Requests / Re: William King and Mary Chedzoy
« on: Sunday 26 November 06 18:16 GMT (UK)  »
Sorry if this appears twice but i clicked too many times  :-[

While chatting i mused as to whether William was born in Wiltshire as my grandmother used to say her family were true English. Blow me down if i didnt find in the 1861 census a William b1780 in Berwick St John, Wiltshire staying at a house where a boarder, Samuel King, had details that matched all those i have for William's grandson. They were staying at the home of someone who's wife came from Radnorshire. I didnt want to assume anything lol (as i already had done that by thinking William was born in Wales) so i looked at the 1851 census and found William with his wife Mary and a son i didnt know about Robert. Mary was cited as born in Spaxton Somerset which would fit the Chedzoy family name. Interesting. I do believe this could well be who i am looking for and have well and truely learnt my lesson. Never ever assume anything lol!

Thanks to anyone who looked at this thread and to Caroline for verifying what i had been told by others. I hope i can find Mary's details and family but it may be a long haul. Maybe Wales was just a detour lol?
