Family History Beginners Board / Re: Elizabeth Bowden in Bideford Devon

Hello Maddys52.

Thank you so much for the comments. I have requested the marriage cert you mentioned above, I wish they would give the actual age and not 'of full age' or whatever they say. But Im going to see what information it can give me anyway.

I would appreicate the article you mentioned about an Elizabeth in High Street Barnstaple, it only just up the road from Bideford.

What I need is the poor records, the ones that cover Meddon Street and the almshouses, I did speak with Barnstaple records office and they didn't think there were any records available sadly.  Why does the programme 'Who do you think you are' make it seem so easy?  ;D

I really hope I can break through this brick wall, from what I can see from others researching this side of the tree, they don't get any further.

Once again, I appreciate your help  :) :)

Family History Beginners Board / Elizabeth Bowden in Bideford Devon

Hello everyone,

I am really hoping that someone can help me because I have been unsuccessful everywhere else I have tried. :(

My ancestor is called Elizabeth Bowden and she is shown in the 1841 census as living in Meddon Street, Bideford, Devon.  Her DOB is 1811 but I understand the dates are often rounded up or down in 1841.  Elizabeth is living what I think is an almshouse with her son Henry.  Elizabeth is recorded as a pauper.

I have found Henry's birth record as it shows his name as Henry Jones Bowden, and Elizabeth is on there as a spinster.  A John Jones is shown as the Father. So she was Bowden when she had Henry and also when she is living in Meddon Street.

I cannot find Elizabeth after 1841. I have found several records of an Elizabeth Bowden burial and death and the records I have found are for a Mother and daughter in 1844.  Another Elizabeth burial dated 1842 but she is 89. Another Elizabeth died in 1843 and she would of been 79.  So I am stuck……
Please can someone help? This is doing my head in  :'(

Many thanks
Donna
