Devon Lookup Requests / Exeter St, Plymouth, c1810
« on: Monday 14 January 08 16:47 GMT (UK)  »
hello all, have recently discovered exactly where this couple lived, which was Exeter St, Plymouth, which I realize is very close to Sutton Pool. They had a son born 1810 also named John (what joy!). He was baptised in THurlestone, but he was actually born in Exeter St. It states his father's occupation as farmer, so Im searching for any further info on this couple. We believe they married in 1808 Ottery St Mary, he was in the Devon Militia at this time, which was common amongst farmers, she was named 'Rendle'. Im also after any kind of info the street itself during this time. With thanks and hope, Paul.

Devon Lookup Requests / Thurlestone-JOHN MAIN 1810
« on: Tuesday 27 November 07 16:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there. Im attempting to trace more info on a JOHN MAIN, he was baptized 18/10/1810 in Thurlestone. His parents are listed as John & Ann MainS, although I think this is just mistranscribed. the only record I have managed to trace of this is on Ray Osbournes Southamps website. His father's occupation is farmer, although he may also be a private of the South Devon Militia, as he seems to be in 1808 when he married by Banns, to Ann Rendle in Ottery St. Mary. There is also another possiblity, John Main marrying Ann White in 1781 Broadwoodkelly, he's described as husbandman (farmer) on the banns document. I also realize that this could be the same man, possibly widowed, so I need some kind of confirmation of this to proceed in any way with any further research.

alreet Yonks! my Main family so far seem to be from Devon, upto c1790 now, but there are quite a few that settled there from Scotland aswell. All my family where mariners too,  eventually moving to Liverpool, Toxteth park, around 1860, where there where also Mains from Scotland living in that area. So I may well find as I go further back that there may be a link.  Just wanted to say hello to a fellow Main aswell!! ;)
