Hi Leonie
My Nobles are all in London. My Stobbs however are almost all in South Shields - in fact I think I am related to half the population of South Shields! However, I cant really get back beyond John Stobbs b 1817 but in Manchester - all the rest were born in South Shields.

Thanks Paulene. I will keep trying.

While writing, can anyone tell me why the person I am looking for would have two army numbers? - he was in the RFA and a lead rider on a gun carriage - I would really love to find out more about his career in the army

Hi Mercel
My ancestor Jacob Weakner was a master mariner and I found dozens of letters written by him form 1800 to 1813 in the maritime museum aty Greenwich. Try also The Trinity House Petitions index which can be found in many libraries - if you can't find one, give me the names you are interested in and I will look them up in my copy.

Durham / Re: Unusual names

Hi
Andrea - I have checked all variations I can think of in BMD - I'll try the census' as you suggest.

Phillip - The last two letters are definitely "ee". I dont know how to add a scanned image on  the site?

My interest was drawn to this one by the "Weakner" middle name which is that of my ancestors. Thought it must be a matronym.

Thanks for replies

Hi. I have just got a birth certificate dated 6 May 1859 for George Weakner Brown b South Shields, Parents John Brown and Mary Ann Brown, formerly Hopkee or Kopkee. I have tried all possible spellings for Hopkee and Kopkee in FreeBMD in an attempt to trace the mother to no avail. Any ideas?

Does anyone know if memorial inscriptions exist for the cemetery around the church? Is ther a site plan for burials? My ancestor George Thomas Weakner and Margaret his wife are recorded as being buried in the 3rd grave from the chuch. I have visited the church but this description doesn't really help
Many thanks
Michael
