Susan,

Do you know how to get there? You must contact Willie Murphy a farmer who lives in Ballynewport.
His ancestors also lived in Ballydargin. He would be delighted to meet you and he can arrange access to Rathmullan Church and graveyard. Get back to me if you need further details.
Billy.

Hello William,

You can search the 1901 Census for the Parish of Dunsfort and the townland of Dunsfort yourself for free. You can find it on the Lecale Historical Society website at http://www.lecalehistory.co.uk. Click on 'Historical Resources' and then 1901 Census etc.   The whole of Lecale is free online at this site. There are also maps showing the parishes and townlands that the Barony of 'Lecale' covers. It includes Downpatrick, Dundrum , Strangford etc.. Good luck in your searches.

Billy.

I have an interest in both of the townlands of Ballydargan and Ballynewport, so I would particularly like to try to help you. I was born in Ballylucas which is a townland beside Ballydargan. I also  know a local family of Murphys who still live in Ballynewport and who are related to the Murphys who used to live in Ballydargan. If you search for Lecale Historical Society on Google or any of the search engines you will find a local history website which has a copy of the 1901 Census for Lecale on it. A search of the surname index of the census on this site will show you a Murphy of Ballydargan. When you go to the Census page you will find a John Murphy and his wife Elizabeth Murphy and 3 sons and 1 daughter. These can't be the same John and Elizabeth who emigrated to Nova Scotia unless they came home on holidays for the Census!! But they must be related. I will try to contact you privately.

There is a Henry Thomas Pitt listed as living in Strangford Village, Parish of Ballyculter, in the 1901 Census. Emily Florence, a daughter is living with him. He is a widower of 60 years. She is 22 years. You can check this and other family details out for yourself by doing a Google search for the Lecale Historical Society website and checking the 1901 Census for Lecale which is freely available on this site. There is a very useful surname index.  Good Luck!

If you go to the website of the Lecale Historical Society you will find a complete transcription of the 1901 Census for Lecale which covers Downpatrick and surrounding district in Co. Down. It has a surname index. In it you will find a Marcella Crickard and some family members. You will also find lots of Shields (of various spellings). A Google search for Lecale Historical Society will take you to the website. There are maps too which show you where Ardmeen and all the other Lecale townlands are located. I hope you find something useful.
