The point is that the NZ info will help you find the NBL info.

If you have all the NZ info, what does Ann Charleton's NZ 1876 death cert give as the names of her parents and her birth place?  According to the info on the DIA website, this started to be included from 1876.

If you have all info from their arrival in NZ, what is the family info that John Charleton, son of George and Ann, would have had to supply in support of his claim to the estate of Robert Robson, who John believed was the brother of his mother Ann Robson/Charleton?

You actually have some rich sources available to you in NZ and it does not appear from your questions that you have yet followed these up.  There is little point guessing which (if any) baptism might be yours when you have easily accessible ways of being more certain.

This article tells of the death of George Charleston in 1863 - he drowned when the cutter "Thistle" sank.  The article says he was well known as the oldest settler of Kawhia.

This next article says that John Charleton, boat-bulder of Kawhia, son of Ann Robson & George Charleton is laying claim to a fortune left by a Robert Robson in England - supposedly the brother of Ann Robson - scroll nearly all the way down.  This claim could/should lead you to useful info about the family, whatever the merits of the claim.

Hi again

The full entry Rosie99 found in Elsdon reads (from an Ancestral Indexes transcription):

Ann Potts born 18 July 1804 & baptised 18 July 1804 Illegitimate daughter of William Potts, Labourer by Ann Robson.

As the child was baptised on the day of her birth I checked for a burial but could not see one under either Potts or Robson.  My transcript goes up to 1812.

You mention that you have been 'given' the parentage of John Robson & Isabel Foster.  This seems to come from an Ovingham baptism:

Ann Robson born 21 Jan & bap 9 Apr 1809 5th child of John Robson of this parish by his wife Isabel Foster.

These dates are consistent with the dob you originally provided - what is your source for this date?

A dob of 1809 is also reasonably consistent with a 66 year old Ann Charleton dying in 1876 in NZ.

How do you know that your Ann Robson was a) born in Ovingham & b) an 'only daughter'?

Do you mean only child or only daughter?

I got the Ovingham bap from the Bishop's Transcripts (note these only relate to Church of England events, not non-conformist baptisms, although non-con couples may have had no choice but to marry in the C of E if Scotland was not an option between 1754-1837 & burials of non-cons are likely to be included, as the churchyard may have been the only burial ground.

You can search the images of the Bishop's Transcripts for some C of E parishes (including Ovingham) for free online at:

https://www.familysearch.org/

Scroll down & click on Europe & then choose the Bishop's Transcripts for Durham & NBL.  These have not been indexed and so will not show up in the results for any searches you do on the website, though you may find other useful info.

You need to scroll through as you would a film.  Please note that there are gaps in all the BTs, sometimes just for a day or so, which can be hard to spot, sometimes for weeks, months and years.

Hope some of this helps :),

Matilda

P.S. This announcement from the "Daily Southern Cross" seems to provide a bit more confirmation that the Charletons who keep hitting the news in Kawhia may be your family:

On 21 Jan 1860, at the Mission Station, Kawhia, by ...Mr R. Nazer to Jane, youngest daughter of George Charleton, farmer, Kawhia

Kia ora Atawhai

I don't think the parentage of Ann Robson has been established - one possibility has been identified.  However, "Robson" is the "Smith" of Northumberland, and given the mobility of the population, and the very common name, you will need to gather as much supporting information as you can about the couple.  Charlton is also quite common within this region.

What denomination were your family?  The IGI is not complete and Presbyterian and other non-conformist baptisms in particular may not be included.

What is your source for the 1809 birthdate?  Is it for Ann Robson?  I would agree that 15 is too young to be a likely age for a marriage for a girl from an ordinary family.  Are you sure you have a birth date and not a baptism date?  This is an important distinction, as not all children were baptised in the same year they were born.  Some could be several years old.

Have you gathered all possible info at the Australian/NZ end, as this may be needed to trace the family back with more accuracy.  Do you have death certs/gravestone inscriptions or anything of the sort?  What were the occupations of George and his sons?

1840 is an early arrival for Europeans to NZ, and especially Kawhia, which is not the biggest place in the world  ;)  Have you contacted local historical and genealogy societies to see if any work has been done on George and Ann?  Have you checked  local newspapers?

A very quick check of Paperspast paperspast.natlib.govt.nz brings up several items about Charltons in Kawhia - could these be your family?

If so, there are many mentions of the family.  For example, there is this article about a Mrs Charlton, which indicates her husband has already died and mentions some of her children:

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=DSC18760804.2.14&srpos=6&e=-------10--1----0+Charlton+Kawhia--

Another later article refers to Mr Charlton as a "pushing enterprising settler" - he was clearly a local identity and there is bound to be some info about him and his family held in local records.  There are in fact heaps of mentions...it is quite addictive reading about the family who lived during 'interesting times'.  King Tawhiao stayed with "Mrs Charlton"!

Have you ordered the death certs to see what info they provide?

https://www.bdmonline.dia.govt.nz/

A 63 year old George Charleton dies in 1863.  Ann Charleton dies in 1876, which hopefully means that there should be info about her parents and place of birth on the death cert, as this is the year this and other info started to be included in death certs (see "Timeline" page).

Good luck,

Matilda

Have you posted your query on the New Zealand board?  That would seem to be the better way of finding out about the individual mentioned in the accounts of the events at Wairau .

Hi Dave

Where did you get Sarah's sister's name from?  I.e. what are your sources for her existence, apart from the named photo you have?  In your posts you have referred to her as Isobel/Isabella as well as Ann Isabella & Jane Isabella.  Just to help the hunt  :)

Matilda

P.S. You will see above that I think the 1861 census entry I posted was wrong & that Radcliff posted the right one.  Plus I added the witnesses to the marriage that I had inadvertently left off earlier - not a good night last night ::)
