and several generations later theres me

So only the very early generations were born in Scotland?  The rest lived in Lincolnshire - or have I got that wrong?

Has the information in the Bible checked out  from other sources?

The Setons in Scotland held various offices in the time of James VI, but I can't find references to the particular combination of names you have given.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: 1911 census

Can I make a big suggestion to share the files with other members of the family.
this will save some members shelling out twice, I have already done this.

also when it comes to the 2011 can people scan/copy their forms when they're all filled in and save that to disc, as it might save the agony waiting to 2111

saying that there may not be a census in 2021

Over on the BBC Family History message board, we get a number of newbies each time a new series of WDYTYA starts.  Some stay the distance, but most seem to disappear when they realise how much work is involved.

I realise that the programmes can't show every minute of every search, but the way it's done is very misleading, they should make it clear just how time-consuming & frustrating it can sometimes be when you don't have a tame expert on hand!

well, i logged in and said that ive traced my tree back to 1540 in scotland.

then some smart arse piped up and accused me of getting it all off the internet and thought he was giving me advice, err been there, done that

anyway, not it isn't that easy, i began with one name, and very little info.

the best advice is to take your time, and keep on checking and cross-referencing, and go to the churches and look at their records.

This why I keep a diary no matter how rambling it may be as its what we are thinking at one given time.

dotted around are weblinks, including facebook and the like, and as far as photographs i have collected them all, scanned them, transferred them to CD and passed them on in this form to numerous members of family and included a complete family tree, so this info should never go astray.

Failing that i'll also leave a sealed copy with my will at my solicitors.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Born midflight
« on: Monday 15 October 07 12:43 BST (UK)  »
My dad died whilst on his honeymoon abroad 14 years ago this month.

but i'm glad it didnt happen whilst travelling somewhere, which he was to do that very day, he died in Cyprus but was to travel to Israel.

so midflight or boat the destination where you land or port is classed as the place,  and marriage onboard say a cruise ?

expect future silly answers now like died on spacerocket to mars.

there are so many boards, BBC, Family Tree mag, but i do find Genes Reunited's tree a bit sexist as it won't let me add the wives of my Gt grandfathers beyond 1700 ?? :o
