Lancashire / Re: Nathan Martindale & Ann Emison - help needed
« on: Monday 16 April 18 11:50 BST (UK)  »
I am descended from Nathan Martindale and Ann Emison. My line comes through Isaac Martindale (Nathan's 10th child)and Elizabeth Douthwaite. I have tried to find the parents of Nathan born 1725 died 13th march 1786 but have not been successful, so I'm sorry I can't help you on that. I just thought you might be interested to know that I was born in 1935 that my father was Alfred Martindale, my Grandfather was James Bell Martindale and Gt Grandfather John Anderson Martindale. It was a long time before I found the parents of my Gt Grandfather who was  born in Kirkcudbright. I finally discovered that he was illegitimate. I found him through "Find the Father"now available on Find my Past. The Old Scottish (Kirk)  records had not been on-line. His father was Nathan Martindale and mother Margaret Anderson. Nathan was from Kendal Westmorland and had been working as a molecatcher in Kirkcudbright.

Thanks Sy--or is it Johnner--I'm as confused as you are, for trying to be helpful, but as you say rules are rules--It's understanding them that is difficult--all to do with copyright.
I could just point out that Janet's Mother couldn't be John's sister because John and Janet are practically the same age!Nice try though! Corriebell

I haven't tried Janet's marriage or death certificate because I already know that her parents were John Cowper and Margaret Johnstone, and Margaret Johnstone's parents were John Johnstone and Janet Charters .
John Martindale was married Aug 7th 1853, and I was sent a brief record of this with no details at all.
Perhaps I should try his death certificate. What has put me off doing that is that "Scotland's People" had told me that because his death was reported by someone who was not a family member (He was widowed by this time and living as a boarder with a local crofter) his parent's names would not have appeared on his death certificate. He did however have daughters in Dumfries, so do you think they would have been consulted for information on his death certificate? I would gladly purchase a copy if there is a chance that the information has been there all the time!
Thanks again for your help so far,
 Corriebell.

Thanks for your interest. I did find this Janet Martindale Cowper and at the time thought I was going to be able to break through by finding her parents or even Grandparents, but nothing fits! My Gt Gt Grandfather John, who is the one whose parents I am after, lived with this Anderson family in 1841 and on his MI is named John Anderson Martindale. He also named his last son Allan Anderson M.
This Janet M Cowper named one of her sons with an Anderson middle name too,but I still can't find any real connection, although I believe she may be John's sister John was born 1828 and Janet c1829.

Thank you Johner for your swift reply and the informaton you have given.
My Martindale family spent their lives in Hutton-Corrie Dumfriesshire, except for a few strays in the Manchester direction and an early period of ten years in Derbyshire.
Yes you are right--the name appears to originate in the place name Martindale in The English Lakedistrict. That is why I'm wondering how John came to be born in Kirkudbright as all the evidence states. Did the parents have a quick trip over to Scotland for the birth, and then disappear back to wherever they came from, leaving him behind-perhaps they wanted a Scottish lass!
There are so many Martindales not only in Westmorland but scattered around the world I think I will now hang up my detective hat --I just had to have a last try on Rootschat, and I appreciate your response.
 Sincerely, Corriebell

I hit my brick wall with a John Martindale born in Kirkcudbright in 1828. I found him on the 1841 census aged 12 living with an Anderson family. I am very curious about who his parents were. There is no available birth record, and nothing on his brief marriage notice, I spoke to Scotland's people who say the death certificate is unlikely to have the names of parents, so I am wondering whether there may be somewhere in Kirkcudbright an MI for his parents?I wonder whether the person with access to the Mi list would be able to check this for me. The good thing is the name is rare in Kirkcudbright,so that should make a search easier. Thanks to anyone who might be able to help. Corriebell

Dumfriesshire / Re: Memorial Inscription Hutton & Corrie

Finding Corriehills cemetery. We called at Craighouse, Hutton-Corrie  to ask whether there was anywhere else we could look.I think the name of the family there was Black. We were told to go back down the road till we found Corriehill farm. The farmer's daughters helped us to clean up the headstone, even providing a scrubbing brush and water! I'll try to attach a photo to give you some idea of the size. It's in a really peaceful setting, but very overgrown. Hope you find what you are looking for. Corriebell

Did you find Corriehills cemetery? It's disused now and you have to get permission from Farmer Patterson to gain access through his land. After almost giving up I found two relevant headstones there. if you haven't already tried that one it's worth considering.
 Best wishes Corriebell

Hello Charles---Glad to hear you are home from Dumfriesshire with such a dearth of info.--I do know how good it feels to track down and scrub up some lonely old gravestone! I'm sure you took photos too and as you say will be thoroughly enjoying sorting all the fresh evidence you brought back. Dumfriesshire is a lovely place to find our ancestors. Thanks for the info on Mary Beattie, although she isn't connected as far as I know to my family---just happened to live in the same house.Good luck with your newly kindled interest. Sincerely, Shirley.
