Armed Forces / Re: Are posted dates on army records ever incorrect?

4th photo , which the  Nov date   on their
records  matches  exactly with reports  in the newspapers of the incident ( so this  little bit of  his service record for the year of 1938 in Palestine  is 100% correct)

3rd photo, although  this bit says from  1937 ( when the others say he was posted in  Jan 1938)

Armed Forces / Are posted dates on army records ever incorrect?
« on: Sunday 03 November 24 07:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
As per my header,  are  army records ever incorrect with some of the posted  and served dates written on them?

Below is a very  small part of my granddads long army record .  I've gone over it time and time again with a fine tooth comb  -. I  can't find anything in it that says any different  to the below dates  in the records  of   the exact  month from when he  served in Palestine .

According  to the records he was  posted 28 th of Jan 1938  , ( 27th according to  another relevant bit, which I  wil post next) and served out there until 12 April 1939.
I am not querying if he went to Palestine in 1938 , as I know  he  was out there that year,  what I am querying  is the  month he was apparently  posted out there ,  and  I also   want  to make  sure that he would have had  no leave during this time out  there ( there's  no leave written down throughout his army record  during his stint in Palestine to say he went back to the uk for a time)

My question is,  is it  100% that he was on his way to Palestine ,  ( left the UK) from 27/28 th  of January?  Or are the army  sometimes  incorrect  with their  dates on the records , because  if he did leave at that date - I have a huge problem!  And I don't  want to jump to  any conclusions  if there it is a  possibilty he may have been still in the UK around  April to May in the same year in 1938 and then  posted to out  to Palestine

My second  questions is , if he  100%, was posted out  there in Jan , is there any slight possibility he could have  been granted  leave back to the UK just a couple of months later around April/ May ,  just for a short  time, then shipped back out  to Palestine ?  ( he was 100% in Palestine in Nov 1938 when he ran over a landmine in his truck   Newspaper reports at the time agree with  that  exact date on the army record.)

Sorry for what may seem like  silly question to some, but I have to rule out any possibilities  that maybe the army is incorrect with their exact month of Jan  that  they say  he served from in Palestine.

One of my  parent's  older siblings was conceived around  May  in 1938 and 100%  impossible to have been conceived in  Jan 1938  ( the child in question  was  born at the end of Jan 1939 )  If the date.( 27/28  Jan)on the record  that he was went to Palestine are correct -  it really would be 100%  impossible for my grandfather to be the child's father - Which I find  really surprising ( as my granddad would have 100%  known the child wasn't his of course  -  he never gave any inkling that the child  was not his and neither  did the child know). This child was born years into their marriage .
.
So you can see why I am questioning  the exact month  written  on his army record.
Thank you so much for any help.

The Common Room / 1.7m WW11 records to go online Ancestry on 1 Nov (now)

"The digitised records will be released via the Forces War Records and Fold3 military subscription websites with an index of the records also available via Ancestry which is offering seven days of free access to its military records from 7 November to mark Remembrance Day." Quote from the above who do you think you are article

The Common Room / Re: billiongraves - cancelling subscription ok?

Hi,
There is no need to pay, take out a paid sub  to see the  images.
I transcribe for them. If you volunteer  to transcribe ,(or  if you  want to just take photos  and upload them) you earn points for every one you transcribe ,  when you reach  a certain number ,  you can use these points to  have a sub account to view the paywall records for free. Although I have never felt  the need to use , activate my accumulated  points

I am just looking at my last email from them, as I haven't been actively transcribing for a couple of months ,.since August  by the looks.of it:
" Congratulations you have earned 1 free months subscription to BG Plus for transcribing 1223 pictures in August 2024. To activate your free month"

That may seem like a lot of transcriptions within a month,  but it's  not really - as many of those are just me reading  through already transcribed  graves ( they need to be double checked by more than 1 person to be submitted  ), ticking the transcriptions if correct , and altering  some of them when they are incorrect.  Although, I did transcribe   an entire cemetery  once that  I noticed in the menu that hadn't  been transcribed  by  anyone , (you can chose which cemetery to transcribe), it is a small local cemetery near my father-in laws home. It was pretty easy to transcribe that particular lot  as most of the graves were pretty new and  very easy to read. What was interesting with that one ,I kept coming across  many  people my hubby once knew
( they were elderly people when  he was a child ).

Regarding if is it easy to unsubscribe from them, it should be,  but I've  never  felt the need to delete my  account  with them as they're not a spammy company, and Ive never needed  a paid  sub.
You can take out a paid  sub, but why  do that when you can get it for free if you volunteer?

Kind regards  :)
PS
Excuse all  the typo's in my reply   lol  ;D.I.am typing on my phone

edited to add this:
PPS.  I've   just googled  the reviews to see what problems  that  some.people may be having with them. ( as I've never had any problems with them at all)
It  seems most of the bad reviews are about  paying for a sub and them taking  money out every month ,  like said above  if you  transcribe you  do not need to pay for
their sub account to view the records .  Some of the review's  say they are inundated  with  spam from them, not true- well not true  in my own experience  as I have  never received any spammy emails from them full stop,  I had to go back to last August in my emails  to find  one of their very few emails from them.
Kind regards

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA parentage possibilities
« on: Tuesday 29 October 24 00:56 GMT (UK)  »
I am led to believe I can access these Army records 115 years after his birth. That would be next year.
So any suggestions as to how we could proceed given that the few tenuous links we have garnered from the DNA Heritage site
Hi,
You can apply  for his WW11  records before  that  after 116 yrs/ 115  birth date ,  if you don't want to wait until next year to apply for them..
All you need to do is  provide them with  his death cert on the application  - whilst  over 116 /115 years they presume the person is deceased , so no need to provide them with a  death cert.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/request-records-of-deceased-service-personnel

It will take months for them to  provide you  with his  record though, possibly a year's wait  , as they are dealing with a  massive backlog at the moment . It will probably be the same  next year too , so whenever you apply,  this year or next year, be prepared  to wait  months on end  after you submit  your application.

I  recently  applied for my husband's  grandfather and another relative of mine and am waiting for their records. Ive paid for one of them  , and am still waiting ( the other I still waiting for the link to pay)  , this below is what  their current  estimates are ( copied and pasted from the last emails   sent by them to me,  dated August just gone )..:
So goodness knows how long it currently takes and I may  have a very long wait  to go ( I did my own grandfathers   a while back , well over a year ago  in feb last year,  and it only took a couple of months  waiting time back then . I received his records from them pretty quickly compared to the now current waiting times)

"this department is currently handling an exceptionally high volume of cases with around 12,000 active requests, and our current average timeline for records to be sent is ten to twelve months. "

Kind regards  :)

 Ps
They will  also accept a war death  record from the CWGC   if  they died  in action, as one of mine that I am currently waiting for  his records  from them , his  birth was way under 116 year's, he was born in 1923  , but  he died in action  . I provided them the link to the cwgc record  and  didn't  need to provide them with an official   death cert from the GRO

I see  they have moved the bar of birth  dates again -  it  says  this when you go through the portal/ online  application form , see my  attached screenshot   ( surely  it is a typo ?  ) :
" You do not need to send a copy of a death certificate if the person:
was born before 1 January 1907"

My grandfather was born  7 months after  that Jan 1907  date   and I did not provide  a death cert for him ,Which was over a year ago , as his fell outside their then cut off dates for providing a death cert .

Anyway, you can certainly apply  for his  records  if  you  have a  death cert for him , or of course wait  until  a required  time after his birth  if you don't want to  purchase his death cert, or if you can't find one.
 Kind regards  :)

The Common Room / Re: FindMyPast - partial free access for Remembrance Day
« on: Saturday 26 October 24 05:15 BST (UK)  »
Newspapers now free, but be warned: I've just hit a Fair Usage limit of 200 records per 24 hour period that I'm sure wasn't there in previous free weekends. I was skimming entire 60-page issues for a weekly column that the search wasn't finding so met it quite quickly.
Hi,
The limits are under the terms conditions tab  on their site, then  under  the fair  usage tab  . Even full  sub holders  have a 24 hr  maximum limit (which is  500  for them  ).
I am not sure  how long they've had these conditions regarding the limits for  their records , as I don't  think Ive ever come  close to looking at  200 records within 24hrs during all their  free weekends  over the years ,so I wouldn't  have noticed if they  previously  had any restrictions or if it is just recently.

My guess is  it maybe to stop some users who have  genealogy businesses   downloading thousands upon thousands of  records for their  own commercial use , monetary gains, hence all the limits for all accounts  (minus  the pay as you go of course).
Kind regards  :)

I have just had a new match for which I'd like to see all the shared matches for
Hi,
Sometimes the  obvious  can be the answer - Have you tried  messaging your match?
If it  were me, and I really didn't  want.to pay for a sub to just see  matches between that  just 1  particular  match - I would message that 1 match, explain  your situation and ask them nicely if they  wouldn't  mind giving you the  rest of the matches outside the 3 you have .

Maybe your  new match has a sub ( especially if they are new match , I would think there's a higher chance that they have taken a sub out along with their dna kit)., and  perhaps they wouldn't  mind copying the shared matches for you -.its worth a shot..

I know  I would copy down the shared matches and give them  to any  of my matches  if asked  ( within reason of course  ie say the top  20, 30 of shared matches  or so, as some.have loads of  shared matches)
( not that I have a paid sub anymore since last April just gone  when I cut my sub off, because of my huge gripes with Ancestry's/ blackstone's  greed and unscrupulous new policies , and thats after almost 20 years of being a full sub holder)

Worth a shot , you've  nothing to lose  by messaging them , but everything  to gain  if they answer .

I assume you can still message without a sub?  ( I have  my dna turned on to private at the moment, unless I quickly switch my visability back on just to check.)
Kind regards  :)

Yes I've messaged the 3 shared matches (out of 7) I can see but none have replied. Most ppl don't reply to messages in my experience. Life would be a lot simpler if Ancestry made the DNAPlus available to buy.
Ah OK,  that's  a shame they haven't answered , maybe  they have just done the test for ethnicity fun  and not  family tracing/  genealogy.

I've been lucky in that respect as most of mine have always  answered,
Although I did have one match who answered me  about two years later  out of the blue  ( I'd all but  given up  hope they would answer.and thought perhaps they may have died or something, as I have a couple of  DNA  matches  that I know they have passed away ) . The reason was they'd  forgotten about  the test. Apparently  It  was for a  fun gift from her daughter and she hadn't signed in for years ( I could see my messages hadn't been read) . Then out of the blue two years later ( could have been even 3 years later , without checking  my messages ) ,  I had message back - from the daughter of my match , when  the daughter checked   her  mum's DNA account for her, her mum had all these messages from a load of people , including  my message . So never give up hope of  some  of them returning your messages years later
Kind regards  :)
