Hi Ebch,

For some reason I am not receiving e-mail notification for replies to my posts so hadn't seen your latest till now.  (Maybe I clicked 'unsubscribe' by mistake)

Thanks for your interest.

I'm particularly interested in the White Swan and the Chemist and Druggist at no.3 for the year 1881.  An ancestor was a servant at the Chemist's run - or owned - by a Joseph Mitchell (from census).

Happy New Year!

No, it's the pub I want to know about.  It's history and reputation etc.

Thanks for the photograph.

I've googled but can find out nothing about its history.  Particularly interested in the year 1881.

No. 7 Queen Street, Barnsley, The White Swan Inn

Anyone know anything about it?

At no 3, Queen Street was a Chemist and Druggist (1881 census)

Hi Christine,

Apologies for not replying earlier.  I've had no Internet for months.

I'm afraid I've very little on the O'Haras and no idea where Mary O'Hara was born on Achill Island.  All I know is that her father was a Martin O'Hara and oral history was that she lived in Newport before emigrating to England between 1850 and 1868.  She was born around 1850.

I've done very little on this side of the family, so sorry not to be able to help.  There could be a connexion - who knows - but I've too little info to make one I'm afraid.

I do actually have a photograph of Mary O'Hara who married a Thomas Gallagher in Rochdale 1868.

Thanks for link Gadget.  I was just wondering if it was a common pet name for Mary Elizabeth (as Polly apparently is).

Mum's name Jim!!  Any Irish stock in the family Redroger?!!  I'm still chuckling.

Carol, what a fantastic age and such an achievement having been born a late Victorian (even though only just).

Thank you all for replying.
