Thank you both ... pretty well sums up my thinking. Sadly, I only have a fairly low res scan and do not have access to original. Much more likely to be one of his sons rather than the father methinks!

Hi
I have this photo said to be of Wilhelm Freitag born in 1815 in Pomerania. He seems to be rather young which would suggest a very early date for the photo. Is anyone able to date the wonderful clothing or offer any more suggestions please?
Many thanks as always,
Tony

Armed Forces / Re: Where was this {Military?] Address?

Thanks everyone.
Looking at it I think JenB has it with the map showing 'married quarters'. My relly's father was a regular soldier [no doubt based at Colchester Camp] and this seems very likely to be where the family lived. What a pity I can't find any definite references to the actual address. But that's what researching your ancestors is all about!
Thanks again all ....

Armed Forces / Where was this {Military?] Address?
« on: Monday 20 June 16 08:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

 I have a rellie born in 1922 with a father in the Royal Army Service Corps. Her birth address is given as;
12, Cambridge Block,
Berechurch Road,
Colchester.
There is a small 'w.d.' following the written address on the birth certificate.

Does anyone know what and where 'Cambridge Block' was please??

Many thanks,
Tony

Thanks for the suggestions .. I hadn't considered either of those. The group of men in the photo are probably on either a works 'Beano' or less likely a cycling tour. Some music would fit in with the 'Beano' idea I suppose. They do look like cold weather coats though.

Hi All!
This is part of a photo I have of my grandfather on a group outing taken in the south of England in the early years of last century- before the Great War certainly. The two guys at the back are wearing some sort of uniform. Are they charabanc drivers? telegram boys?? Any ideas please?
Thanks as always

Cat well thrown, scrimnet!

I know that, with family research, it is very dangerous to make assumptions. I assume that 'my Alf' is a British [territorial] soldier and that the theatre of war was most probably northern Europe or possibly Turkey based largely on circumstantial evidence suggested by the source of the photo. if he comes from or is related to the family I suspect - the Cheshers of Hertfordshire - they have a family history of enlisting in 'local' regiments.
Thanks to all for your suggestions and interest.

I don't have access to the original and only have this as a scan.

Sadly, I only have this low res scan. The original came from a source which included one or two other photos of what were certainly British troops [and relatives of the source] so I've no reason to suspect that this chap 'Alfred' is not also British. It does look like an astrakhan doesn't it? Could it be a photo taken in Gallipoli? Did the Turks wear such headgear? Mike's observations on it being a small port are convincing.
