Hi Heather - I can hardly believe you have given me such a big breakthrough.  Thank you so much.  Having put the info you gave me on my ancestry.co.uk site, I was referred to the Rolf Family. Wow, what a lot of Burgesses!
Having moved to Portsmouth, Jacob started his own dynasty.  My Burgess grandfather was Charles Frederick.  His great-grandfather was Jacob.  CF had 9 children in Portsmouth, one of whom is still alive.  I'm so pleased I shall be able to give her all this information.
There will be a lot more people to add to Bryan Rolf's family - I'll drop him a note.
Again cousin Heather, thank you so much.  Marie (nee Burgess)

Jacob Burgess would be amazed at the interest in him! I've certainly got a lot more to investigate now, for which I thank you.  His 1851 census return clearly says born "Broadlands", 1861 says "Bradford, Wilts" and born about 1799.  If he is the only Jacob Burgess born around that time, I am going to assume that this is "my" one.  Our family will be very interested.  Thanks again. Marie

Many thanks lizdb.  I'm at the stage where I've looked on ancestry.co.uk and GenesReunited - one other person has a Jacob Burgess born about that time but no details.  I'll visit the area later this year.  marie

Wiltshire / BURGESS Family

Jacob Burgess (born about 1798, Bradford on Avon) moved to Portsea.  He's listed in 1841 as working in the dockyard and in 1851 as a Greenwich pensioner.  I can find no records of birth or christening so how can I find out who his parents were.  He was one of my great, greats.

Family Bibles / Nicholson family lost bible
« on: Sunday 16 March 08 09:27 GMT (UK)  »
Nicholson family bible was mislaid during a house move in Kent.  Could be anywhere now - should be grateful for news if anyone finds it.  Family was from Sussex and Surrey with names John, Stephen and Harry all from the 1800s.  Reply to Hofer -
