Derbyshire / Re: Gingerbeer Manufacture
« on: Tuesday 15 January 08 22:27 GMT (UK)  »
I pass woods lane every day, there was at the time a spa water manufacture there, the factory has been demolished, but their is a row of cottages called Spa Cottages, and W. E. B and date also on the wall, and a Spa Villa around the corner on Stockbrook Street, the W.E.B stood for William Ebenezer Burrows, he owned the Spa Water Works and workers Cottages on Woods Lane and formed the Mineral Water Company Burrows & Sturgis, maybe your relative lived in one of his cottages and made gingerbeer at Burrows Spa Water Works, just a Theory
I notice that on the 1891 census Hannah Hollis is remaried to a Shreeve at 2 Woods Lane and between 10 and 16 Woods lane is Listed as " Ginger Beer Manufacturer". or i will looke at the dates on the cottages, Burrows may have took over after Frederick Hollis's death

Derbyshire / Re: kedleston rd/ Sherwin Street
« on: Monday 07 January 08 19:31 GMT (UK)  »
on my 1899 revised copy of the ordnance survey map it shows Sherwin Street/ Bradley Street/Longford Street as only having a handfull of houses on them, with most yet to be built on, their was a row of ten terraced houses opposite Bradley Street on Sherwin Street, 4 houses on the corner of Bradley Street and Sherwin Street and only 2 houses on Longford Street, i will try and have a look if any of these carry a name plate, i noticed Alpha Villa on the 1891 is listed after 92 Kedlaston Road and your Sherwins were Maltsters, the only other Building on Sherwin Street was a Malthouse.

Derbyshire / Re: 7 Severn Street, Derby
« on: Sunday 23 September 07 23:53 BST (UK)  »
I live around the corner from severn street, i do not know if the house were tied to Rolls Royce i do not think so, they are quite nice semis and terreced houses and would have been quite nice at the turn of the century, what was your rellies name, i have 2 employee record books of workers at rolls royce from the 1920-50 period listing there rate of pay address, d.o.b, war service etc. Severn street was originally called Curzon Street, but just after the turn of the century Alvaston was incorparated into the city of Derby and the name was changed to avoid confusion with a curzon street in Derby town centre. on my 1905 map their are no Houses built yet so in 1910 i would guess the houses were fairly new.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Re: Death/burial/obituary help
« on: Thursday 05 July 07 12:12 BST (UK)  »
HI JAN.
IF I GET A VIEWER AT DERBY LOCAL STUDIES ON SATURDAY I WILL HAVE A LOOK AT THE BURIAL INDEX'S, FOR Uttoxetter Old Road Cemetery, (just around the corner from Stockbrook Street, but mainly the wealthy buried here, but good chance of a grave if there), St Luke's Church (right across the road from 184 Stockbrook Street, sadly now paved up to the front door, and new houses all around, graves moved to Nottingham Road, in unmarked mass graves, i think) also Nottingham Road Cemetery ( popular for the masses, 50/50 chance of a showing grave, ownership normally lasted 50 years and somebody else buried on top of you) obituary's for the period again hit and miss, mainly the wealthy or well known, but worth a look.

will have a look, my freind Keith Bromage, was born on Stockbrook Street, his grandad William Bromage, was a Footballer and later a Trainer for Derby County, his brother Enos Bromage was also a Footballer, if i remember rightly the first Goalkeeper for Leeds United, my freind Keith has Football medals and Photos of the Bromage brothers in teams from the period 1910 to 1920ish with teams like Wolves/Leeds/ Sheffield United/ Derby and others, i think his Great Grandad was from the Crick area of Northants before moving to Derby

Derbyshire / Re: Obituary
« on: Friday 29 June 07 11:56 BST (UK)  »
Tintwistle only became a part of Derbyshire in 1974, and i dont recall seeing any articles on the area in old Derbyshire papers, so i would guess its Cheshire you want, unless Glossop area papers covered the area.
