United States of America / Re: David P. Imlach 1904 - 1931 Chicago
« on: Saturday 15 October 11 09:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello David, good to hear from you. David P. Imlach's father David Jamieson Imlach b. 1876 Rathen, Aberdeenshire married my first cousin twice removed Jane McNaught on 18th June 1903 in Glasgow. I know both returned to the UK from Canada in the 1930's but don't where they ended up either here or back in Canada. Sister Florence b. 1908 married Thomas Thorburn 1930 Winnipeg I believe they ended up somewhere in England. Brother George b. circa 1913 died 2004. Any loose ends you can help me with gratefully received likewise any help I can give you.
Regards

Some Family History Societies do Graveyarding on week-ends and it might be worth contacting the local one at http://www.dgfhs.org.uk/ as they might have already recorded the graves your looking for in the process. Or you could also try http://www.dgnhas.org.uk/

Lanarkshire / Re: Census 1911

I assume you've considered the fact that the name might have been misspelt McIlwraith might have been McIlraith, McIlrath etc. Try using the wildcard and see what you come up with ie McIl*th in Lanarkshire. Always worth a shot.

Delighted to PM and I've been trying to catch you on at the same time as myself to do so but we never seem to have clicked! You in Oz and me in Scotland with a ten hour difference makes for difficulties.

Just to throw something else into the pot here. My great great grand aunt married Laurences twin William in about 1849. This is not a line I've been investigating too much so don't, as yet, have exact dates. William b. 1828 d.1881 wife Ann b. 1830 d.1897. He was also a salmon fisherman. I don't know how much fishing he did but he did have a hand in producing 12 offspring so I guess Ann didn't suffer much from PMS!
It's also interesting to note they produced twins too.

William, my GG grandfather, married Dedimiah Dawes and lived in Reigate Surrey until her death when he returned to live with his sister in Thornhill. They had 8 children Margaret Amy, Frances (Fanny, probably named after her grandmother), Elizabeth, William, Charles Henry, Jessie Janet (not sure of this one as Janet could be Jessie if you see what I mean), Emily, and Louis Arthur in that order. I'm interested to know where you think John fits in as I've no record of this family having a John. I have a Daguerreotype and a portrait of William up in my attic, very dapper not surprising since he was a draper to trade.
Johns' family in Canada seem to have made quite a name for themselves in government especially William Kirkpatrick, a conservative and David, a liberal must have made for interesting conversation at the dinner table!
I really must try to renew the acquaintance of our cousin in Canada if he's still around.
Incidentally David in Ballarat seems to have been a bit of a philanthropist and while he died unmarried he was quite a wealthy man.

Hi J.J. Many thanks for the Ballard information I was not aware of it for as you can see I'm still joining up the pieces. Some time ago I was in touch with a living ancestor of John's line in Canada however he's not replied to my last two e-mails so I'm not sure if he's departed this mortal coil or decided he no longer wishes to pursue a relationship. A pity as I'm sure he'd have a lot to contribute. You'll note that I did eventually get  a answer to my original post.
You win some and you lose some but hopefully you win more than you lose.
Best wishes

I believe that John had a grain business in Penpont that failed he then left for Canada about 1842. "McNaught John 1811-1873 from Penpont, DFS. s/o David M. and Margaret Corrie To Ont. Ca. 1842 M. Sarah Kilpatrick. Ch 1 Elizabeth went to Aus. 2. Margaret 3. David b. Ca 1839 4. Thomas 1841-1921 DC 23 Oct 1981". John died in 1877 at , Tuckersmith, Ontario. I've yet to discover when Sarah died. I have births and deaths of all his children with the exception of Elizabeth's birth which I have at about 1836 and James birth about 1853 and death ? Elizabeth I have recorded as having died in 1908 in Geelong, Australia though no exact date. You could confirm for me Her husbands dates and I have four children listed. I have a copy of her Uncle David (John's youngest brother) will which is interesting in that he wrote her out of it as he believed her to be well catered for by her husband John Boyd. I am descended from John's brother William and it was his daughter Emily that went out to Australia to replace Elizabeth as Davids housekeeper. On Davids death Emily, his main beneficiary, returned to join her sister in Thornhill and eventually died there in the same house both her father and uncle James died in.

Hi Robbra, I'm away from home at the moment on my mobile but would be interested to know more of your end of the family. I have done extensive research on the family with some 11,000 links. I'll be in touch again on my return home. Cuz Ruari.
