Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Re: Burials - Abinger

Dear Dawn

Thanks for the reply
I don't think this family is mine.

At 1851 census James Stedman, Maria and children William, Eliza, George, John, Mark. Ellen and Allan were all at Pitland Street. Son James was in the adjoining property.
1861 census - James Stedman, daughter Eliza, son Allan and grandson William were at Pitland Street.
1871 census - James Stedman, wife Maria, son Mark and grandson William.
Also at the 1871 census - John Stedman and wife Lucy were at Pitland Street - these are my great grandparents. John is one we see in 1851 census.

I hope all this helps.

I appreciate any assistance you give in finding the elusive John and Sarah.

Thanks again for all your help.

Regards
Scott

Dear Jane

Re: your enquiry about death of Sarah Stedman - I thought I got the detail off Ancestry but have retraced my steps and now can't find it - I have sent for this death certificate so will see what that says.

Thanks so much

Dear Jane

Thank so much for all your efforts - much appreciated.

I can confirm that John and Sarah (nee Longhurst) are mine - On the Ewhurst Baptisms of 1810 James Stedman( My 2xgreatgrandfather) was baptised 28/10/1810 - an entry on the page indicates the marriage of John and Sarah 17/10/1810.

I believe but haven't proved Sarah was the daughter of Lydia Longhurst
Sarah was baptised 11/5/1788 at Ewhurst, daughter of Lydia. Lydia Longhurst was a witness at John and Sarah's marriage.

There was a Lydia (not a common name) Longhurst baptised at Ewhurst 20/8/1766 to James and Elizabeth Longhurst. Maybe your Dawn can throw some light onto this family.

To answer your question about ages on the Removal Order - I used the dates of Baptism - John baptised 1786 at Cranleigh (Surrey History Centre research) and Sarah as above.

I also have evidence of John an inmate at Poor House at time of Benjamin's Baptism at Abinger.

I also found that John Stedman living at Abinger with the Longhurst family in 1851. I read it as a widow age 69 - This ties in with the John Stedman being buried at Abinger aged 76 in 1857. This also ties in with a Sarah Stedman being buried in the district of Dorking in 1852. Making John a widow.

I am sorry if I have confused matters but appreciate very much your help. I live in Australia and don't have access to the many resources you have. I have ordered the death certificates for John and Sarah.

Thanks again for all your help thus far.

Regard
Scott

John Stedman, wife Sarah, children Sarah 4yrs, Benjamin 2 yrs and twins William and Mary aged 6weeks were removed to Abinger parish on 17/8/1822.

I assume they were put in the Abinger Workhouse- no trace since.

John would have been 36 and Sarah 34 at this time.

Can you please find any burials for this family in the area.

I appreciate any help you can give

Scott

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Abinger Workhouse
« on: Saturday 28 March 09 01:47 GMT (UK)  »
Whom I believe to be my ancestors were removed from the Parish of Ewhurst to the Parish of Abinger. The order was signed 17/8/1822. Would they have been placed in a Workhouse and would this have been at Abinger.

On the 1841 census I cannot find any trace of the family or a Workhouse at Abinger. Where was the Abinger Workhouse and how long did it operate.

The Family was John Stedman, wife Sarah and children Sarah age 4, Benjamin age 2 and twins William and Mary aged 6 weeks.

What ever happened to them?

Any help greatfully received.

Scott
