Hi John,

I come from their son Ralph and his son Featherstone. I’d be interested in the book, is it still in print?

Hi John,

I only came upon this post as I was also trying to find Jane’s dob and parents, as I too am descended from Thomas and Jane. Have you had any luck?

Northumberland / Re: Blyth History.

I’ve had a great couple of hours reading through the 45 pages of this thread. My grandfather came from Blyth, although his birth is listed as Seaton Delaval. He was Edward Giles Fryer born in 1897. So many of the words have filtered through the family even though I’m a second generation Australian! My great uncle Walter died when he fell down a mine shaft at Bedlington Colliery in 1958. Even though I’m a female, I was named for my great grandfather Joseph Fryer. Hopefully this year or next I’ll get over there and see what’s left of where they come from  :)

Hi there,

My 4th Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Ayres (Eyres, Hares) born about 1790 possibly in Birmingham (as listed by her husband Joseph Porter on her burial) but we have no other information - nothing can be found anywhere.  My Aunt who had originally done the family tree but has since passed away had both Irish and Gypsy written next to her name with question marks.  She had been in contact with other relatives in the UK.  So that is all I have to go on.  Their children (Porters) were named Joseph, William Eyre, Mary, Hannah, Thomas, Sarah Bertha, Ann, Henry and Eliza.

I also have a rogue Lucy Smith born abt 1790 who married Samuel Poultney in Leek, Staffordshire.  She doesn't appear to fit in any of the other local Smith families.

Hi Debbie,

Obviously I'm coming to this conversation rather late, I'm also descended from William Hughes and wondered if you ever located a birth location?

- Jo (who descends from his convict son, also William)

Hi there,

This is an old thread I'm aware, but I come from the Blackbird's too. The farthest back I've managed to get is to my 8th Great Grandfather, Matthew Blackbird baptised September 9th, 1666 in Newburn, Northumberland. He married Eleanor Kirkup on the 28th of May, 1692 at St Andrew's Newcastle. I come from their son Matthew baptised 2nd June 1706 at St John, Newcastle who married Jane Wild November 11, 1730. Then their son, another Matthew - baptised September 5th 1731 at Ryton, Durham. He married Mary Wilson 2nd February 1757 and they had Elizabeth Blackbird born in Tanfield, Durham in 1759.

My ancestry ethnicity results are a little curious to say the least.  I am, according to my paper trail - 100% British but my ancestry results beg to differ.  Out of my great grandparents I have 6 born in England, one in Wales and one in Scotland. Out of my 2 x GG I have 12 in England, one in Wales and three in Scotland.  From my 3 x GG 24 England, 2 Wales & 6 Scotland... So, I was surprised to learn that according to Ancestry.com my genetic ethnicity is as follows:

46% Irish
37% West Europe
11% Scandinavian
3% Great Britain - ONLY 3% really???
2% Italian/Greek
<1% Iberian Peninsula

On 23andMe I come in at a more respectable:

63.1% British & Irish
8.1% French & German
4.5% Scandinavian
20.2% Broadly Northwestern European
2.3% Broadly Southern European
1.8% Broadly European

So, is my extensive paper trail wrong?  Is my Danish 'uncle' really my mother's father?  It's a mystery that's for sure!

That would be because your second Thomas is my William's brother and that they tended to use the same names from generation to generation :)
