Hi,

Coming at this from another angle, I find myself wondering if this has anything to do with my 4th Gt. Grandma Elizabeth Tozer born about 1775, whereabouts unknown.

Elizabeth marries William Longden in Wanstead in 1803.

However, it is her daughter Mary Ann Longden's marriage to Samuel Cowd that makes me think we might be connected. Samuel Cowd came from Lympstone in Devon on the outskirts of Exeter, and the family appears to have had businesses in both places - they were Tailors. Furthermore, Elizabeth Longden nee Tozer and her brother Wm. Tozer appear to be witnesses at the wedding:

23 Jul 1826

St George the Martyr, Southwark, England

Samuel Cowd of this Parish Bachelor marries Hannah Elizabeth Longden of this Parish Spinster a Minor in presence of Wm Tozer and Elizabeth Longden.

Your thoughts?

Glenn.

Sorry it's taken a while to respond, we have been on holiday.

This does look like a promising connection, I think that 'your' Elizabeth is probably 'my' William's sister, so that make you are distant relative of my Wife's.

Let me look a bit deeper! If I can

Regards
Tom

Thanks All
Interestingly my Mom-in-Law remembers that William was working in London as a restaurant porter after the war, which ties up (but doesn't prove!) with the profession on the 1901 census. Big gap there..

Yes that looks good, just looking at the 1901 census now that I have  a better idea of Williams age

Thanks all so far, I hadn't spotted William and Mary's marriage, also Christopher's middle name was Edward, so that is him in 1910. Can't find him in the 1911 census though.

Could this be them in 1911?

I didn't think William was that old, so I don't think so, but.. I will double check with my Mother in Law, she only met him once or twice though after the war!

Their son James Joseph Heffernan (b1920 7 St Kevins Cottage, Synge Street, Dublin. d1986 Birmingham) was my Father-in-Law, Jim's siblings were Christopher, William, Mary & Michael (all older than Jim)

William died in London, sometime after the War, but my Mother in law is unsure when.

I believe Christopher the eldest was born in 1911, but after the census, so no luck there. The only William Heffernan, that I can find of about the right age was in Kevin St. Dublin, but I have been told elsewhere this isn't the right one.

I know its all a bit vague, but if this rings a bell with anyone I would be grateful for any information. The only other rumour that I have is that the family may have originally come from Cork.

Thanks
Tom

Hope you have/had a good sleep.

From your previous posts I see that you have Ann / Jonathan on the 41 census. I have just looked and see an Ann in Aston, Deritend, with a soon Jonathan. I take it this is your line.

I am descended from Thomas's brother William (1803, Shrawley)
I live just south of Birmingham, so about 30-40 minutes drive from Shrawley. I have been to the church there and have spoken to the Vicar briefly. (I was there for a wedding believe it or not, not for research!) I had a look around in the cemetery but couldn't find any Willetts's, mind you most of the headstones from that time were unreadable. Having said that it is a very small church and the burial area was also small, so I guess the lesser mortals were buried elsewhere.

I havent had chance to go back since.

Cheers
Tom

I am wondering if since you posted this, if you have managed to sort Edward's or Eleanor's parents at all.

Edward is my 4 x Great Grandfather, so I would be really interested in any information you may have discovered

Thanks
Tom Willetts
