Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: looking for samuel featherby
« on: Thursday 02 January 14 17:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I too am looking for Samuel and James Featherby.

I have noted that James' wife (Elizabeth Ann Morley) was from Quinton (seen on one of the census returns - can't remember which one) - there is a Quinton in Northamptonshire. Also, somewhere I remember seeing that James was said to have come from Thornton - there is a village in Buckinghamshire named Thornton. Thorton and Quinton are only 6 miles apart!

Maybe this is the way to go on researching these two!

Hum... not if she is going to be like that! Maybe I'll steer well clear of her. But you're right - I think there may be something in it.

Had the wellies! Not sure about the hat! I'll go up in the loft tomorrow and did it out.

re proof - can we actually ever prove half of the stuff we have in our trees? I do try and source everything I include but it is not always possible. I think in my own mind, I'd like something a bit more concrete but there are too many coincidences at the moment for him not to be my grandfather. I will keep digging. I have had an email from someone in his family and she was a little short with me, which is encouraging to me.

Thanks Linda. I just wanted some feedback on whether people thought I was on the right track. I don't suppose I'll ever be able to prove it mind.
P.S. I had a coat like that and have a photo of me in it - looks remarkably similar to your photo. I'll have to dig mine out!

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / went family from Colchester

I wonder if anyone out there can help me find my grandfather!
My grandmother was named Florence Mary Holland and she was born in 1895 in Standford Rivers. She moved to Epping and was living in Crown Hill Copped Hall in 1911. Her family all worked at Copped Hall. She had two illegitimate children (naughty gran!). The second, my father, she named Frank Edward Went but on the birth register it states his name is Frank E.W. Holland. He has been known throughout his whole life as a Went and so have we, his children. It is obviously a long story, which I shan't go into here, but I think I have found a prime candidate for my grandfather.
I wondered if anyone out there could either shed some light on this or see if I am on the right track. In 1911, all the 'Wents' were centered around Colchester - with one glaring exception - a married chap (of course) residing at 'The Redoubt' in North Weald. He was in the Army Ordnance Corps. He was born in Colchester and his father was Henry Went living at 103 Canterbury Road. His name  - Edward James Went. He was living 5.2 miles away from my grandmother in 1911.
When gran got married in 1921 to George Cole in Bishop's Stortford (That took me a year to find!) she recorded her surname as Went. As I can find no marriage record between her and a 'Went' , I can only assume she was telling porkies! I can find no baptism record for Frank either. He as born in 24 Woollard Street, Waltham Abbey on 28th April 1918.
Has anyone any connection with this family in question and does anyone reading this think I am on the right track or am I just clutching at straws?
thanks.

Thank you.

I have the 1841 and 1851 censuses. It's just that we seem to have hit a dead end here and I was grasping at straws!

I have a James Featherby in my family born c 1796. On the 1861 census he is recorded as being born in Fawnton Nottinghamshire. Can anyone help me find this person in Nottingham. His father may have been Samuel Featherby who is reported to have come from Northampton.
Thank you

Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / Holland/Thurley
« on: Tuesday 31 March 09 19:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I have been trying to establish whether a James Holland born in about 1773 in Bassingbourne Cambridgeshire married an Alice Thurley born about 1775 in Bassingbourne. Alice's parents are claimed to be Thomas Thurley and Ann Trustram but I cannot find a duaghter of that name - only Ann Thurley. (Ancestry members) They are supposed to have got married on 13th October 1802.

Would somebody be so kind as to blow this out of the water or verify it for me please?

Thank you

Tim
