Still haven't been able to prove parentage of William/John McKay (other than marriage gives father's name) but have constucted a lovely tree for a McKay family which hopefully will be of use.

Well you know the old saying. If at first you don't succeed try putting your tree up on ancestry and just make up the missing parts... hehe.

But serious you have done so much. I am really very chuffed to have all the bits and bobs you have found. I mean I know it not proved YET. But his name on wedding cert, plus son born Glenarm and he's a farmer. I think that's him. I will prove it eventually. Especially now I have so much more info to work with. Something always turns up, even if it's years later. Plus all the other McKays you have found. Lots to work with there :)

The map is interesting, and the other links. It's all VERY helpful. Thanks again aghadowey. I hope I haven't taken up too much of your time. I suspect I have. You're a star! :)

Potential red herring, but posting because of surnames/location/timescale, in case they fit in somewhere down the line:

Marriage
29 Oct 1854
Glenarm

Patrick McKay son of a Daniel
to
Mary Boyd daughter of an Abraham

Tis the way the mop flops at times eh LOL.  I have been saving all the links/documents and jotting it all down. Thank you. Already have a lot of new stuff to go on thanks to you.

Still working at this and I may have found William/John's father William, his father and other relatives in records but will take be a while to check and double check everything.

Oh goodness :) , Thank you for all your efforts. I'm just downloading the other stuff at the moment and renaming etc and checking through again.

Ahhh you have both been very busy. Just got the PC started up and looking through it all now. This is all looking VERY promising. I can't thank you enough for the help Scotmum and Aghadowey.

Fantastic new avenue of reseach with Mary McKay's marriage and William Mckay's death.

Just looking at your comment about the different religions. I had to go look that up. I had never heard of Non-subscribing Presbyterians before today. Unfortunately the three links (the ones for Jane McKay 1901 1911 and Huge 1911) wont work for me and I get an error page. The religions are interesting indeed.

Did he keep to a consistent version on the various birth records of his children?
This I don't know. I have no baptism records for the one son I know of. No birth certificate either.

I talked to the lady in question this morning after reading the posts here. She said it was always known her granddad was William John and not just John even though he had dropped the William part on some documents. I mentioned the Jane Boyd from ancestry tree and get this, his son's FULL name was James Henry Boyd McKay b.1915. There's that Boyd turning up that you mentioned earlier.  ;D

Ok still reading back and forth trying to make sense of all your finds. Thank you once again and sorry if I missed out anything in reply.

The Griffiths Valuation, which would be around time of the Glenarm birth and could potentially include the father, named in the 1890 marriage, William John McKay. Unfortunately, it has no William McKay entries in either Glenarm Upper or Glenarm Lower, although as a possibility there is a William McCay recorded in Doonan townland, Glenarm Lower. There was also a Stewart McKay who was married and fathering children at Doonan in theb1860s (see http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~fremac/genealogy/ireland/pafg12.htm ).

Thank you very much for this. :)

So, the full info on your chap that is now available (but wasn't  mentioned in your first post), to assist those trying to help you is (based on the swapping around and/or adding of names):

John McKay and no initials or other name on all military records
William John McKay on marriage record
John McKay and no initials or other name on Census
John McKay and middle initial W at death ?

Did he keep to a consistent version on the various birth records of his children?

Apologies for not mentioning it in first post. To be honest it just didn't register me with to say because I've become so use to family members (in my own tree) using middle names in census returns etc and just in my head it was one and the same. He is indeed John W McKay on death index. (1947). I presume, I don't know, but presume like many that had same name as a parent they would be called by middle name often.

Once again sorry for any confusion.

I too at first only found his original military papers, but later found him going back for territorial duties, then WWI, and it is the same person. They are attached. If you find it on ancestry and click on to what looks like a differnet person, few pages on, it is the same person but returned later in life for duties. If that makes sense. I stumbled across the later papers quite by accident.
