New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Death 1890 - 1907 Brick wall
« on: Monday 13 May 13 08:17 BST (UK)  »
Frances Thornhill dies between 1881 and 1891, have not checked this. Eliza can be found in the 1891 census, a widow living at 19 Commcerial? Road, Stoke upon Trent with children Edward 19, Renard, should read Denard aged 17 and daughter Lizzie Gadd now 26 and her husband John Gadd.    Francis named his son Dennard after Hannah's first son from her marriage to Francis Defoe.

Eliza disappears, she possibly dies, have not followed this either, but Edward, Lizzie and Dennard can be following into subsequent census docs.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: James Brooker & Sarah Taylor
« on: Tuesday 07 February 12 22:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
IGI Batch # 7700422, records parents of James Brooker as Thos. & Eliz.  Other source: 1841 UK census James, aged 60, an agricultural labourer, wife Sarah, and Mary Taylor aged 85, living in East Grinstead, Worth Sussex. Also present are married daughter Ann Tulett aged 20 and her husband James, but transcribed as Suletan. Daughter Elizabeth Brooker aged 15 also recorded.

I have 9 children for James and Sarah Brooker. They are: Mary Ann 1803, James 1805, Mark 1808, Sarah 1810, Ann 1814, Philadelphia 1817, Harriot 1820, Milley 1823 and Elizabeth 1826.  Is that about right?
regards, palmeri

Their son Mark Brooker - to my knowledge Mark aged 18 was shipped to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) for theft and arrived 1826, He later married Matilda Martha Simmons in Launceston 1837 and they had 6 or 7 children.

You may have more info in your head than you think.

Hi again Malcolm,
I only have Fanny and William with 2 children. Ruby who married Frederick Church and Iris who married Charles Finernan.

The FT I have been working on now encompasses members of the Whitfield family but, I am sure, with many errors.  On my brother's side, been a work-in-progress since 2005, he dates back 28 generations to Robert, the Bruce. His  fiancee's side is nearly as impressive. Hope they will be pleased with it as it starts with their daughter and it is their Christmas gift, right or wrong!!!  Best effort but always ready for assistance and correction.  They are off to NZ in December to catch up with family and show off their beautiful daughter Eloise, who will be 6 months old when they arrive in Auckland.

You, and she Eloise or her mum must be 2nd, 3rd or 4th cousins.

Thanks for your help have entered the details you gave me.  Although had the info about Winifred, died 19 buried 21.  I have the4 New Zealand burial locator and marriage disc.  They help a little.

kindest regards,

Hi mate,
Re George Whitfield.  I am not very good on NZ place names. So probably assumed he died in Christchurch because of other family members but after looking at the NZ Electoral Rolls, he could have died anywhere.

1880-81 NZER records George at Colombo Street, Stanmore, Canterbury.  He is a Letter Carrier. No other Whitfield family mentioned.
1885-1886 NZER records George, a letter carrier, and brother Henry, a tramway guard  and father Thomas, out of business,  at Colombo Street, Stanmore.
1890 NZ Electoral Roll records George, a postman living at Colombo Road, St. Albans Christchurch, with his father Thomas, occupation, our of business. Nearby is brother, Thomas Blizzard Whitfield, a Baker, in Victoria Street. Only males listed.
George married Winifred 17 March 1891, St. Johns Church, Christchurch. She is the daughter of William Bates.
1892 their son Arthur George Whitfield is born.
By 1896 NZER Thomas Blizzard, brother of George, Thomas now married to Helen Dow and living at 100 Victoria Street.  Nearby is Winifred, wife of George, at 24 Lower High Street. George is not listed.
By 1919 NZER Arthur, son of George and Winifred, is  a chair maker now residing at 626 Cashel Street, Linwood, Avon, Canterbury with his mother Winifred, married.
There are some big gapes but Winfired certainly died in Christchurch. George could have 'buggered off"
regards,
PS which child of Elizabeth and Henry are you descended through?
My brother's lady is comes down through James Thomas.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 look up please - Hart
« on: Monday 11 July 11 05:35 BST (UK)  »
To all,
Sarah Hart, nee Wells, widow, married John Horsell, widower, on 12 July 1846 St. Peter, Bethnal Green. Sarah was the daughter of William Wells, Soldier, deceased. Sarah lived at 38 Old Nichol Street and John at 50 Old Nichol St at time of their union.     Then in 1851 UK census we find the John and Sarah Horsell with John's son Robert & dau Eliza and her son Thomas Hart. Although recorded as son-in-law (which I believe was the correct terminology in the 1800s) Thomas is step-son. Thomas becomes a Doll-Maker like his step-father. John Horsell in later census docs is recorded as a silk weaver.  You can also see on the marriage entry for Thomas Hart and Hannah Biggs that John Horsell, step-father of Thomas signed as a Witness as did Hannah's mother, Hannah Biggs.

This, of course indicates a death for John Hart of pre 1846.  I cannot find him, Sarah and son Thomas in the 1841 but as lot of folk were missed or avoided the census thinking it was something to do with taxes.  Obviously John died, soon after the marriage as there does not appear to be any other surviving Hart children. None pop up with Sarah in a later census.  Although we find 11 year old Hannah Hart visting her grandmothr Sarah Horsell and step-grand dad in the 1871 census in Paddington.

Sarah in the 1891 census is a widower and an inmate in the Paddington District Workshouse, She dies in 1892
