Sussex / Re: Hurstpierpoint Baptism Register Margin Notes

Usually three names recorded and different each time - I haven't come across it before. I think they must be witnesesses / godparents as one of the names appears on both baptisms from the same family that are three years apart which suggests there must be a connection.

Sussex / Hurstpierpoint Baptism Register Margin Notes
« on: Wednesday 23 August 23 14:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have just come across the Hurstpierpoint Baptism registers in the course of my research. In the 1845-1877 register there are occasional notes in the margin that I would expect to see, sometimes a date of birth and sometimes a P for a private baptism. However, when you reach 1850 they start recording names in the margin of each entry that often bear no obvious connection to the baptised. I just wondered if anyone with local knowledge has any experience of what was being recorded here? Are they witnesses?

Thanks for any info.

Kent / Re: St Margarets Plumstead
« on: Friday 11 August 23 23:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi - I'm in the same situation as the original poster. I have a record of a burial in the St Margaret, Plumstead burial records on Ancestry. I understand from the posts above that there wasn't a burial ground at St Margaret's and that burials were either at St Nicholas' church or Woolwich Cemetery.

Deceased online states that it has all records for Woolwich cemetery from when it opened in 1856 until 2020. I have searched for my relative and they are not listed in Woolwich cemetery.

I am assuming therefore that the burial was likely to have taken place at St Nicholas. Can anyone add any information to that already contained in this thread that could help to confirm this assumption? Also be grateful if anyone can confirm that graves have now been cleared and most are  in St Nicholas gardens in front of the church?

Many thanks for any assistance.

I would be grateful if anyone with access to the Welford Road cemetery records can add any further information on the following two burials - May Ann Green buried on 7/11/1890 aged 58 and Joseph Green buried 18/5/1891 aged 68. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

My apologies - thank you Galium - any idea on the word I had down as fluid or fruit. Fluid doesn't seem to fit but it definitely looks like a d at the end?

Thanks bookbox too - I would never have known it was Sion.

Thank you so much JenB - I could make most of the letters of "eight day clock" out but because I had never heard of such an item I couldn't put two and two together. I'm off to google eight day clock now!  ;)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / First attempt at Transcription of Will
« on: Wednesday 02 November 22 11:50 GMT (UK)  »
This is my first attempt at transcribing a will and after spending a long time on it I think I have managed to decipher most of it. There are a few words which I just can't make out. I would be grateful for any advice on how accurate my transcription is and any advice on the remaining words.
Many Thanks
