Derbyshire / St.Alkmund 1841 census
« on: Friday 31 July 20 23:23 BST (UK)  »
This is for anyone searching the 1841 census on A***** for a person who they expected to find in St.Alkmund, Derby and cannot. I've just found pages in District 11 where the transcription errors are numerous, not helped by very bad handwriting. Knowing some of the common surnames used in the area, I can see many that appear to have been indexed incorrectly. I usually only submit corrections for known persons/families, and I don't really want to compound errors for these unknowns by doing the same. It maybe worth cross-checking on other sites that carry the 1841 census to see if your missing ancestor magically appears.

Hi Liz,
Thanks for your reply, and the tip about Longford, who would have known? So that uncovers John's baptism. It's interesting to find what can so easily be missed  :-\

Hi Liz,
I'm trying to trace information on John Oldknow b.1813 Smalley, and his possible connection to a Sarah Fletcher b.1801 Nottingham. I wondered if he was a descendant of John & Hannah mentioned in your original post.

John's daughter Caroline had an illegitimate son George H Oldknow, who appears - detailed as Grandson - with Sarah Fletcher on the 1861 census.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Gedmatch - no new matches
« on: Monday 11 March 19 22:12 GMT (UK)  »
Sure enough, the samples match each other big time, but when I do the one-to-many match, they don't match! Some are there, but my closest match on both the original Gedmatch and on the directly uploaded sample doesn't figure AT ALL on the transfered kit!

When you log onto GEDMatch Genesis, check the list of kits under "Your DNA resources:" If one of the matching kits has an "r" next to it, this indicates a research kit that will not show up in one-to-many, but can be used as an initial kit to match against.

I would also like to know if MIs have ever been collected here, and also if Horsley churchyard is open to visitors. Are there still lots of graves existing, or have all the stones been moved?

Is there anyone local to Horsley who would know?

At least one of my Woodward ancestors has a headstone here (I have been told) - and one day (distance permitting) I would like to visit and have a good root around to see if I can stumble across any of them.

One of my Woodwards married an Abbott at Horsley Park, and I have a copy of the article mentioned by Collin, but not traced any link to the John Abbott mentioned.

Thanks for those links Margaret, it's very interesting to see that the number of people tested at Ancestry has reached 10 million, and conversely that the amount of tests on GedMatch is so low.

As most results can be uploaded to GedMatch, and the matching tools available seem to be the best available, I would've expected more take-up, although GEDCOMs are quite sparse, possibly to deter those pesky name-collectors.
