Galway / Re: Malletts of Tuam - where do I start?

Thanks Shane,

That was really informative.

I don't suppose they would have appeared in a directory as his occupation in 1851 was a humble agriculatural labourer but as they managed to accomodate eleven Irish lodgers in the same house I do wonder if he had a little money to afford to rent some room, or that they were simply squeezed together like sardines in a tin.

I'm not aware of any other relatives in Ireland but I also didn't realise it was a such a rare name. When I been searching close matches have included names such as Mylott, Mellet, Milotte. Could it be a variation of Malley, or O'Malley? I don't know.

I'll certainly look to see what the National Library hold. Thanks very much for the tip.

Much appreciated.

Galway / Malletts of Tuam - where do I start?
« on: Thursday 05 February 09 00:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

For several years I had assumed that I would never be able to trace my Irish ancestors and was at a complete dead end. Until that is, the 1911 census came online and suddenly there was a place name - TUAM Galway!

I am hoping to trace the MALLETT family. They arrived in Burtonwood Lancashire between 1846 and 1851 where they first appear on the census; Class: HO107; Piece: 2202; Folio: 264; Page: 21

John Mallett was born c1817, his wife Catherine (Joys) c1821. Their first two children were also from Ireland. John 1844 and Mary 1846. I have traced the son John up until the 1911 census when he said that he was born in Tuam. No other census gives any indication of a birth place. This "fact" is all I have.

His English born daughter (my gt gt gt grandmother) married in a Roman Catholic church so I am guessing that they were a Catholic family.

I've been looking through the records on brsgenealogy.com but they are not providing any conclusive results.

Please please please can someone point me in the right direction? I'm keen to start searching and don't know where to look.

Thanks!

Leitrim / Re: Seeking McCarthys - Leitrim place name - can you make this out please?

It's interesting that you make out the 'Drum' part of the name as I just couldn't see it myself. Drumahrie is an excellent suggestion. It's a start certainly.

A townland? Oh my! I realise I have a lot to learn here!

Thanks very much indeed for your help. It was much appreciated.

Leitrim / Seeking McCarthys - Leitrim place name - can you make this out please?
« on: Sunday 25 January 09 23:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

My ancestor Thomas McCarthy was born in Ireland around 1855. He settled in Lancashire England and married here in 1879. Until the 1911 census came online I had no idea where exactly in Ireland he came from. I know that his father was called Charles McCarthy as was stated on his marriage certificate, but this has been insufficient to trace anything more of him.

Unfortunately I am not able to make out the place name that is written above 'Leatrim' on the census.

If anyone is familiar with the localities and towns in Leitrim could you provide me with your valued suggestions please?

Thanks very much indeed.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Re: Warrington St Elphins Marriage Look Up Please?

Hi,

Yes, I had to register again when I updated my email. The service wouldn't let me log back in without an activation code, and I realised I'd made an error with the new mail address, so couldn't receive it.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Carole,

A birth record would be very useful. The awesome people of the online parish clerks have transcribed these registers for free access I see, but alas, St Elphins marriages end at 1837. Those records have been a Godsend!

I just wondered, having followed this Smith line thoroughly via the census records, why they have the mother as Isabella consistently, but in the GRO index there is no obvious marriage for Edward Smith to Isabella between those dates. Hephzilah I suppose at least sounds like Isabella? I'd be satisfied if it told me Edward's father was also Edward, and a blacksmith as fits with current findings.

Thanks anyway
