My Stepmother, Janette Holehouse worked at Kayser Bondor as a stocking turner - her machine was under the window to the left of what is now Tesco main entrance. Her Father Ted Holehouse also worked there, having moved from Nottinghamshire.
Her grandmother was Lydia Gentle from Baldock

Hi

Coming late to this board, I too have ancestors who were born on Spike Island. I looked up the father on ancestry under military records and found his children's baptisms recorded under the NOK section with the date & place

Shropshire / Arthur Sydney Day b 1899 - which Regiment?
« on: Sunday 27 December 09 16:01 GMT (UK)  »
Arthur (Known as Sydney) is recorded on his daughter's birth certificate as being both a professional Boxer and a Sgt in No. 2 Dispersal Unit in 1919

The Regiment has not been recorded but I have a  photograph of him in uniform posted from Ireland in 1917

He lived at that time in Yew Tree Cottage in Whitchurch, Salop

If anyone can help me with any further on any of this information I would be grateful to blast this brick wall!

Gloucestershire / More Alsops from Bristol to add to the collection!
« on: Monday 14 December 09 13:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All!

Maybe it's just my ALSOPS but they are an elusive lot to pin down!.

My Gt Grandmother was Teresa Agnes Alsop b 1868 in Bristol.
daughter of William Francis Alsop, a Mariner (1827- 1876) born in Bristol & Mary Caroline Towells of Taunton.

William was son of  James Alsop (1782-1855) & Eliza nee ? (from Dublin)

I have not been able to verify where James was born other than in the 1841 Census he is born in Gloucestershire  - he was a cordwainer. I think he may be the James Alsop born in Coalpit Heath, Gloucestershire.

Beyond that I cannot find any earlier Alsops in my branch. However I have tracked down living relatives for all bar one of William Francis & Mary Towell's children.

Hi

I used to live in Baldock and had my wedding reception in the old ballroom at Kayser Bondor where the Rolling Stones once played! My stepmother also used to work there (HOLEHOUSE) as did her family.

Have you tried contacted Brendan King at The Baldock Society as they have a small collection of documents on Kayser Bondor?

South Africa / Doctor Walter Alexander (1895-1964)
« on: Sunday 29 November 09 08:18 GMT (UK)  »
Walter William Francis Alexander was born in St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland, eldest son of Walter (a soldier of the 5th Fusiliers and a plumber) & Mary Josephine Alsop (a House Servant to Father George Angus at The Presbytery St Andrews).

He was named for his father & His maternal Grandfather from Bristol UK.

Walter trained and qualified as a Doctor of Medicine at Bute Medical Building (part of St Andrews University) in 1919 and emigrated to S Africa. He became the Chief Medical Officer for the Rezende Mining Company and was there for over 30 years. He eventually entered politics & was MP & Speaker of the House between 1959-1963

I have quite a lot of information on his ancestors but not much on the SA side, although I am in contact with a living descendant of his brother Angus.

Any further information would be most welcome

No problem!

Redroger & I share a link with the Bottisham Ayres, many of which appear to have belonged to the Non-Conformist faith so records have been hard to come by.

My Gt Aunt Elizabeth Beard married Stubbing Henry aka Harry Ayres (son Of William "Tiffler" Ayres & Hephzibah Cornwell)
